For the question regarding ET's about them having what technically be cknsidered there extension of A-school if you will in kingsbay will only be attended by only ET navs if they have there orders to a boat and they will be assigned to an SSBN or an SSGN, they may have a school in Bangor washington, but seeing as im currently in MT "C" school in GA i wouldn't know to much about that. Hopefully that answers your questions regarding to that, and if you have any further questions if you ask my dad and he isn't too positive on how to answer he can ask me and i'll either tell him what hes looking for or ill post it.

From what i understand, the escape suit ascent is not mandatory, only a few pass the medical screening to participate, no worries. I was a Navy Nuke and spent my career on Subs, we didn't even go to Sub school, let alone be screened to perform an ascent.

Hey Michael,

Although the chances of a sailor ever having to escape are slim, being incapable to clear ears, is a warning that the sailor would suffer a traumatic injury if he were forced to evacuate from depth.

And by depth, I'm only referring to 30ft or so ...  I'm an open water diver and so is my brother-in-law.  A few years back he suffered a reverse block on ascent (a rather unusual and always a dangerous problem).  Despite 30+ minutes trying to clear, he was unsuccessful.  Time finally forced him to surface, his ear failed and he bled all over the boat.

I don't know if they'll allow a retest.  But as a diver I can say that it would be wise to re-evaluate whether the consequences are worth the risk.  I'd also add that passing the test is no guarantee that a sailor won't be injured during an actual emergency, but somehow I wonder if the Navy would knowingly take the chance.

Sorry I just re-read what I wrote, and it reads in what I consider to be a patronizing tone.  My B-inlaw, will not dive anymore; he knows the escalation of trauma if he continues to push the envelope.  I would not begin a dive with your son if he flunked the ascent, because knowing when to dive and knowing when not to dive is every bit as important as knowing how to dive.  For me or if it was my son, I wouldn't say: "Think about it" I'd say: "You know the risk, now do the right thing... sorry for your loss."

I have a question. If a sailor is "disqualified" due to not being able to clear his ears properly & not completing the escape suit ascent what does this mean?? Does he eventually have to complete it before graduation? can he not serve on a sub?

Found out that he graduates on my birthday, how cool, that's about as good as it gets.

My son graduated Friday. Not sure if that's the normal day of week for that or not. We were inviteed to go, but we're on the left side of the country. I may still go for a visit.

Our son starts BESS tomorrow, he said it's done Jul 11 (Mon), does anyone know what day they normally have their graduation ceremony on; not puttin' the cart before the horse, but we'd like to schedule a flight soon.

Son came home for mother's day. Looking pretty fit! We had a great but all too short visit. At least I'm going his direction on business and get to spend a weekend at Kings Bay.

Don't know how to shrink the image size.

Thanks Pete and Cheri, I know he's happy with his first few days out there, adjusting to the reduced structure vs RTC life....
