John Thanks for the info on BESS and the Iraq thing, my son left last night for Groton and is supposed to start school in a week we only got to visit with him briefly after his PIR which was yesterday and then about 4 hours at the airport, We're so proud of him and excited for him too, it was good to see he had so many friends going with him to school, maybe your son will meet him and give him a few words of encouragment I know he'd appreciate it, his last name is Schroeder. Thanks again for the info.

Greeting Dean !

My son just finished Sub School last week, and his graduation ceremony up there in Groton is this morn. He will recieved " Most Improved Sailor" award. You must be very proud and excited. Thanks to your son and you for your service. "BESS" means "basic enlisted submarine school". the scuttlebutt having to do with sailors going to the ground war comes directly from my son on the phone, and other sites. seems the powers that be are offering sailors a bonus to train for the Iraq/Afgan spheres, for God knows why. My son also says they are not prepared to train the sub school grads for their "A" school, (AIT, when i was in the army ....) so that is why he is waiting to get word on that. who knows why they enlist them, then can't fully train them. "Hi, i'm from the govt. and i'm here to help !!"

Thanks for getting in touch, and God's Peace to you and your family.

Hi all, my son Andrew has his PIR tomorrow and heads for Groton tomorrow afternoon, he is scheduled to start Sub school on the 4th, I was reading some of the other dads comments and was wondering what is BESS,having a Navy background myself I used to be pretty good at acronyms but its been a few years and I'm a little rusty. Also what is this thing about sending new sailors to Iraq I have'nt heard about this on any other navy sites.

Dana, thank you so much for getting in touch with me. You must be very proud of your son. I have worked on "real" boats in ship yards, and small boat yards, with old fashioned railways and cradles. (sp) I can't believ sailors , who are not CBees or Corpmen, are getting sent to fight with ground forces ..... who'd a thought.COB, that is some goal. Your son must be a go getter. Tell him i said thanks for his service, as well. b/t/w, this is my one day off during the week, so i gotta go. thanks for contacting me, and stay in touch now and then. it means alot.

Yours, john sr.

John, yes my son Joshua mentioned "boots on the ground" in Iraq too. I begged him not to do that. I told him, stick with the original plan you had. He is married, with a young daughter and step-son, and they don't need that kind of stress, worrying about his well-being. And neither do his parents! He is doing well, now. He has finished his schooling and is on his sub, in drydock, and working fast towards his silver dolphins. He has moved his family to the area, and all is well at this time. His long term goal is be the COB one day. With his attitude and work ethic I believe he WILL achieve that goal! I wish your son, John, all the best!

I guess this forum is not that active because we are all so busy. Just wanted to share that I am thankful my son, John, did well in Sub School, and is now waiting for A School to start. It seems there will a time of waiting until A School does start. Any Scuttlebutt on Sailors being encouraged to take the training required to go fight on the ground over there in Iraq / Afghanistan ? That is something my son mentioned on the phone .....

john the ssn list is a fast attack glade to read no one seriously hurt, being a sub sailor (retired) i was on the darter when she collided with a merchantant ship causing great damage to us it is extremly scaring but the crews on subs are so highly trained to fight any situation but i bet the captain will be releaved of command, tom

here's that story:

Two U.S. Navy Vessels Collide in the Strait of Hormuz
Story Number: NNS090320-04
Release Date: 3/20/2009 11:08:00 AM

From Commander, U.S. 5th Fleet Public Affairs

MANAMA, Bahrain (NNS) -- A U.S. Navy submarine and U.S. amphibious ship collided in the Strait of Hormuz March 20, 2009.

The collision between USS Hartford (SSN 768) and USS New Orleans (LPD 18) occurred at approximately 1:00 a.m. local time (5:00 p.m. EDT, March 19).

Fifteen sailors aboard the Hartford were slightly injured and returned to duty. No personnel aboard New Orleans were injured.

Overall damage to both ships is being evaluated. The propulsion plant of the submarine was unaffected by this collision. New Orleans suffered a ruptured fuel tank, which resulted in an oil spill of approximately 25,000 gallons of diesel fuel marine. Both ships are currently operating under their own power.

The incident is currently under investigation.

Both the submarine and the ship are currently on regularly scheduled deployments to the U.S. Navy Central Command area of responsibility conducting Maritime Security Operations (MSO).

MSO set the conditions for security and stability in the maritime environment as well as complement the counter-terrorism and security efforts of regional nations. MSO deny international terrorists use of the maritime environment as a venue for attack or to transport personnel, weapons, or other material
