OK, the son completed ATT and is now in ACU until beginning of the year. He is organizing his liberty for end of December during the stand-down at Groton. What have people found as the best travel route out of Groton/New London to an airport? He is heading back home to Twin Cities of MN area. Depart from Hartford? Depart from Boston? Options?
Question for the experienced...my son completed BESS in early Oct (he graduated with distinction). He is now in ATT - which I believe is Apprentice Team Training. What is covered in ATT? He tells me that he is in class from noon to 8pm daily.
How cool is that....a Navy legacy for sure!!!
Hope PIR was everything we told you it would be! HooYah!
My son was able to have any electronics he desired--cell phone, 2 laptops, 24" monitor, PS3, well, you get the picture. They do have to follow an approval process of obtaining chits for all their electronics, but as far as I know, there were no significant limitations. As for securing them, I believe all he ended up having was a locked door on his room. He never had any problems with anything being stolen, although it's not to say it doesn't happen. If I remember correctly, my son only took his phone with him after PIR. We shipped his laptop, etc. later once he knew his mailing address, but I can't remember if that was his choice or not. What worried me at the time was how all that garbage was going to make it to his permanent assignment. The Navy took care of all that and shipped everything for him. It it even managed to make it there before he did, albeit, he was at home for two weeks!
My son has in PIR at RTC on 11/8/13 and will be going to BESS at Groton, then continueing at Groton for his "A" school. My question for everyone is regarding electronics and more specifically laptop computers. I figure he will be allowed his cell phone, will he be allowed a laptop during BESS and "A" school? Would it be a good idea for him to have his laptop there? Will they have something they can secure things like laptops in? Just wondering if we should take his laptop to him when we go for PIR or wait and ship it later. Any thoughts?
Thanks James. It sounds like he is OK with the ACU time. He had a delay in start between PIR and start of BESS, too, and he was a little "bored", but got busy with some qualifications he could complete. Now he is pretty comfortable around Groton, and he has other people he knows - partners for work outs, team mates for soccer, etc. He has already worked out time at the local recruiting office here around home to work with between Christmas and New Years during some liberty. He is upbeat and still fired up. BESS is going well.
