Our son did PIR Sept 21, 2012 and just recently finished sub school. Since we are 15 hours away, we did not attend graduation. Since subsequent schools were full (?) he has gone straight to A school and will pick up the other schools later. Biggest difference between Basic is MUCH more freedom and MUCH less yelling. He now has a watch, cell phone and computer, and only two roommates. Biggest problem is his first son was born 9/16/12, bu the has been able to come home twice. (9/21 & Christmas Not the way I would like to see him raise a child, but she will move when he has a duty station assigned. Other son served on an aircraft carrier and got married after he got out.

My son’s PIR is February 1.  And then he is off to Sub school.   I have found some information on line but not as much as boot camp. Where can I find more?  Also are there grad ceremonies after basic sub school? Is there more freedom than basic training?

Got to go up to Groton for my son's BESS graduation. Very similar to A-School graduation. The real surprise, we got to tour the USS Toledo, a fast attack which my son has be assigned to when he finishes all of his schooling. If you get to go to Groton, look into the possibility of touring a boat. It is up to the Officer of the Day. Very eye opening.

Our son came home twice from Sub School and went through Hartford both times, otherwise we would've used Providence, flights didn't work out for us tho. Going to Hartford he can go himself by train and taxi, unless he has a friend with a car who would take him.

I would go to NYC if leaving out of Groton, can take train and shuttle to all airports.  Also, should consider Providence RI, 1 hour ride, can also take train and may be cheaper.  Also if several of his shipmates can get flights out together, may be able to arrange for a single van pick up at a single rate.    I would not consider Boston at all.   Also tell him to ask his chief or LPO what would be the best.  MWR also may be running holiday shuttles.  Most of the junior sailors forget to use this resource.  Where is he going home to?

My son is thinking of coming home at Christmastime.  Does anyone know what is the best/easiest/cheapest way to get to either the airports in New York or Boston?  Thanks.

Update: Hurricane Sandy and SUBASE Closure

by Naval Submarine Base New London on Monday, October 29, 2012 at 11:01am ·

Submarine Base closes to all but essential personnel

Storm preparations complete

GROTON, Conn. - Naval Submarine Base New London (SUBASE) and its activites will close to all but essential personnel at noon today as the base preparations in advance of Hurricane Sandy's impact on the coastal Connecticut area have been completed.

"Departments and tenants will decide which of their personnel are essential based on the storm forecast and ongoing operations, and personnel with questions should contact their chain of command. Sailors will be in liberty status, and civilian personnel will be granted administrative leave," said SUBASE Commanding Officer, Capt. Marc W. Denno.

The base expects to re-open on Tuesday and will begin assessment and recovery operations after the storm passes. SUBASE will continue to alert all base personnel to the base's and its activities' status with regarding to open or closure. If available, the base will continue to get the word out via media, Facebook, and the base info line: 860-694-4444.

Denno pointed out that the two main concerns the severe weather presents to SUBASE are the possibility of flooding associated from storm surge and the possibility of a significant power outage from storm impacts to community services.

"I'm confident with the significant preparations Team New London has excecuted," said Denno.

The base completed storm preparations yesterday. Work parties placed 8,000 sandbags around designated lower base facilities as well as completed the placement of building flood gates at those lower base facilities designed for their use. Five submarines will remain in port during the storm.
