OK, it's our turn. My son and nephew graduate Friday the 28th and a group of 6 of us from the great state of Washington, are on our way to Great lakes and would love to hear some great ideas to go see. We'll be there for about a week. Our two sailors will be in Great Lakes until Tuesday. So will be with them through the weekend. We definitely what to see a Cubs game.

If you want to laugh-visit Second City. Also, don't miss pizzeria uno and especially don't miss Portillos-They have the best italian beef-sausage in the city

Here are a couple of tips, we were just there last weekend and Molly wanted to go to the Aqaurium, there were at least 3 to 4 hundred people in line so we went to the Field Muesum first, great idea. We bought what is called a city pass, it gets you into the Field Musem, the Aquarium, the top of either the Willis tower or the Hancock building, the planitarium, the science musem and maybe something else I can't remember. I think it was $70.00, and it gets you in through a special area so no waiting in line!!! That was the best part. Molly got in free to all the attractrions as she was in uniform and since she was with us got to the front of all the lines too. She was also able to ride the bus or L for free and the weekend rail pass from GL to Chicago was $5 a person for the weekend, Molly had to pay for that. Take the train and park at their lot, do not drive, the construction and traffic is crazy and you will spend at least $40 to park. Hope that helps.

for those of you that will be in Great Lakes at the end of July please Check This Link to the Collings Foundation schedule for the Wings of Freedom Tour. It is a chance to ride in a B-17, B-24, or B-25 and very likey meet some of the flyers that made histroy during WWII. I've flown in the the B-17 and it is a ride that is unforgetable to say the least.

I highly recommend the Spring Hill Suites (by Marriott) in Waukegan. The rate is like 94 a night but it's brand new, 10 minutes from the base, free wifi and free breakfast. Nice suite with fridge, sofabed, etc so our son could stay with us. We just spent the holiday weekend out there visiting our son in A school. Did the Navy Pier (free boat rides for the sailors), Wrigley Field and toured the base. Great weekend.

Chicago is a beautiful city. We enjoyed it very much, my favorite part was we took a boat ride through the city, we got on the boat from Navy Pier. It was very relaxing, as we got to sit and ride for about an hour. The smell of the chocolate factory was a very wonderful smell. All ages would enjoy this. (Especially us older ones). But, nothing could compare to the graduation itself. The young men and women standing up for our freedom, a very emotional time for us all. We are proud of all our sailors.

Being from the Chicago area I can suggest many area attractions, for dad and the kids, Six Flags Great America is only 20 minutes from Great Lakes, and for mom, Gurnee Mills shopping mall is right across I94, and if you need lodging Gurnee has several hotels\motels including Key Lime Cove with its indoor water park, If your the camping type Illinois Beach State Park is only 30 miles north of Great Lakes, they offer almost 500 campsites, beautiful hiking trails, picnicking, and because it's located on the shores of Lake Michigan there is swimming and boating available for those who would want to do those, there is also a hotel inside the park.

My personal favorite is the Jelly Belly Factory. It is in Pleasent Praire, Wisconsin. It is oly about 1/2 hour away from BC.

My son told me that if the sailors come in uniform to a Whitesox game that they get in free. you might have to check into this, but RDC was the one that told him this. His RDC also told hi of some of the other things that you can do while in uniform that you either get a discount or get free. almost every store there in the great lakes area gives a military discount. My son and his wife went to an IHOP one morning, after she and the baby had moved up to be with him, he had jusyt gotten off of a duty weekend was still in uniform. He said that when they had gotten done they waited for the check, when the waitress came by and asked if they needed anything else he said we need the check and the waitress said that the couple seated next to them had picked it up for them and asked her to tell him hooyah when he asked about the check. then he remembered a tag on the front of a car in the parking lot that had navy chief retired on it. he ran out to look for this gentleman and his wife but they were already gone. I told him that was probably the only way that this gentleman new how to say thank you for serving this great country.

I found this calendar on chicagotraveler.com. Gave me a couple ideas I did not think of. My daughter was really big into theater while in high school. A tour of some old Chicago theaters would be fun.
