CO’s Corner:
As the holiday season approaches us, we find ourselves wrapping up our Smart Start work and knee-deep in preparations for getting the ship ready for the 44-month refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) at the Newport News Shipyard (NNS). Each department worked hard successfully “scooping” their spaces in preparation for the move, and I am confident that we will enter the dry dock on schedule.

I want to ensure that everyone knows we have a Fleet & Family Support Center (FFSC) located at 2600 Washington Ave. in Newport News. The FFSC recognizes that being in the military presents unique challenges and opportunities for service members and their families. FFSC's programs and services are designed to help military members and their families make the most of their military experience…and all of their services are FREE!

At the NNS office, the following services are provided:

-Mental Health Counseling
-Financial Counseling
-Family Counseling
-Referral Services
-Community Information Services
-Career Counseling
-Job Seeking
-Volunteer Opportunities
-How-To Publications
-Outreach Programs
-School Programs
-Spouse Programs
-Teen Programs
-Education / Classes

Please take advantage of this great resource of information.

We had our annual holiday party last week in Hampton Roads. Our MWR staff put on a fantastic event for more than 1,400 of our Sailors, families and friends. The crew is eager to begin their holiday leave with their families and friends, but we must remember that this can also be a very dangerous time of year.

Holiday safety should be on everyone’s minds, especially if you will be traveling around the country. Weather and road conditions change daily making driving more challenging; home fires (due to lights on the Christmas trees or stockings hung near the fireplace) are prevalent; children are out of school playing along busy streets; folks engage in winter sport activities like skiing and snowboarding; and alcohol related incidents increase due to seasonal parties and gatherings. Please be extra vigilant and safe during this busy time of year, and take care of one another.

Most importantly, please look out for one another and if you know a shipmate that is going through difficult times—don’t hesitate and ACT: ask how they are doing, show them that you care, and get them the help and treatment that they need.

Junifer and I want to extend our warmest wishes to you and yours during this holiday season. Cheers to you all…Be safe, have fun and return back to work safely. Happy Holidays and a very Happy New Year!

CO's Corner

I am sincerely honored to take Command of ABRAHAM LINCOLN and to commence the next chapter in this warship and crew’s life. We’ve got a huge and difficult task ahead of us! It is a task that is vitally important to the security of our national interests. Our aircraft carriers play a central piece in our foreign policy and are in high demand around the world. As our nation shifts attention toward the Pacific Theater, that demand will only increase as aircraft carriers are a critical element to that theater’s strategy.

The pre-shipyard preparations, early maintenance on difficult jobs, and refueling preparations we have started with “Smart Start” and SCOOP (Ships Consolidated Offload and Outfitting) will set the team up for success once we get to the shipyard. The maintenance we will conduct over the 44 months beginning in February represents 35% of the depot level maintenance for the 50 year life of the carrier. Because we ta
ke the time to properly conduct maintenance on our ships, the United States Navy has ship readiness and might that is second to none. However, a carrier undergoing maintenance is not contributing to that carrier presence.

That is why it is vitally important that we treat every job, task and evolution with a dedication to getting it done right so that we complete our mission on time and return ABRAHAM LINCOLN to the fleet. Right and On Time! You’ll hear that often.

You and your family are a critical member of the team to get this job done on time. Even though it is nearly a four year process, every day counts and we cannot afford to let the schedule slip. Quite simply, we will discover things we didn’t anticipate and it is much harder to put a ship back together than to tear her apart. We need to be smart how we SCOOP the ship. We need to work smartly to get ahead of schedule. We need to follow procedures and not take shortcuts. And we as a team need to work side-by-side our teammates from the shipyard to accomplish our mission of overhauling this ship and getting her back into the fight.

I look forward to working with you and to meeting the families. My wife, Junifer, joins me in thanking you for all that you do as a Naval Family, and for the contributions and sacrifices you make in support of ABRAHAM LINCOLN and our nation.
