FPO means "Fleet Post Office" by the way.....important to fill that form out correctly.....some Post Offices will go out of their way to help military parents while some do not..........

and the basic address format:

Sailor's Name

Dept/Division

USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70)
FPO AP 96629-2840

Great, thank you very much. Looks like the address is an FPO AP

 address. Whatever that is LOL.

depends on the address- and you'll need a customs form as well.....check our Care Package group for info: http://www.navydads.com/group/carepackagesforourtroops

Just wondering, my son gave me an address to send care packages. Is this going to get it to him on the ship?

the NAVY has spent lots of money updating their IT infrastructure on the carriers and there is much more internet/email access than ever before.....

Paul, thanks for your input and as usual you always have good info to add. Don't know why I never thought of printing out his emails and placing them in a scrap book. A book like that would make nice gift to give to my son later on in his life along with the letters we've received from him during boot camp.

guys- emails while at sea:  you have to realize that all comms end up being satellite and everyone thinks there are sats everywhere with unlimited bandwidth- not so.  First there are areas where there is not good coverage and at time the bandwidth slows down considerably.  Also remember- Navy comms have priority over sailor's mail and most rightfully so!  There are also situations where mail is limited or cutoff for various security reasons....the famous "river city" conditions.  Finally just want to say that your sailors are pretty busy!!! There are ratings that endure 18-hour days most every day....that doesn't leave much time for things like sleep and watch....for you dads that have never gone through a cruise before....things sort themselves out and you get used to lack of mail.....treasure it when it does come!!!  I still have some emails (printed out) from my daughter's cruise in '08 and my son's in '09.....need to get those in an album one of these days!!!!!

I received an email from my son this morning. It sounds like he's doing really good and said he likes to hang out on the smoke deck during breaks to watch the F-18's as they fly around and land on the ship. He said watching NHRA Dragsters at night doesn't even compare to what he's experiencing out there with watching the F-18's.
He's a CS so he probably runs out of the kitchen and heads outside every chance he gets lol.

This is our first rodeo too Phil so I know exactly what you mean. Byron's already been through this so I'd bet his advice is sound. Patience seems to be key here.

I'll continue to post updates when I get them and I hope you all will do the same. I think it helps to read a little something regarding our sailors on the Vinson.

I think I type it right I just need a military oriented spell check. Haha. Maybe there's a market for it. Thanks Byron, it does help. We knew communication would be sketchy but when mom doesn't get anything for a couple days things start to get a little tense here at home. (if ya know what I'm saying) . I am thankful for this group for sure. It's been great support. Thanks again!
