We have arrived in port Manama, Bahrain for some very well deserved rest and relaxation. The crew did a spectacular job this last month at sea--answering every call and providing reliable air power day in and day out. This team has many strengths, but the most important is ensuring aircraft launch safely and launch on time for their mission, each and every time. It truly is a team effort between the Sailors stationed on the ship and those stationed in the squadrons of the Air Wing. It is a team effort because it requires give and take from both sides. From moving and spotting aircraft, to building bombs and signing them over to the air wing, receiving and repairing equipment, to stocking and inventorying parts so they are available when needed--one doesn't have to look too far to see the teamwork that makes this carrier/air wing team flourish.

The crew has worked hard together at sea, and they will go on liberty together in Bahrain. They will reinforce on liberty the tight-knit relationship required when you live so close together on a ship. I couldn't be prouder of their performance on the ship, and I fully anticipate they will be equally great ambassadors ashore.

VADM Miller, the Commander of FIFTH Fleet, visited the ship the past 24 hours and brought several foreign ambassadors stationed in Bahrain. Several important countries to this region were represented, and it was a great opportunity to show the magnificent capability of this ship, but more importantly our Sailors. Our Media Department did a great job taking them all over the ship, and they had a chance to hear directly from the Sailors. One of the ambassadors was totally amazed that we could have an all volunteer force. This is a very simple reminder about what makes our country and Navy so great. Serving because you want to serve and because you believe in what you are doing is a true force multiplier.

I am sure you will hear from your Sailor in the coming days if not today. The naval complex in Bahrain and Manama have grown considerably since I first visited this country as a midshipmen back in 1983 during a summer NROTC cruise. I've been back many times and the facilities are now first rate. Your Sailors' performance has been first rate and I look forward to joining them ashore to share a cold one and make sure they know it.

Yes Byron...She married a great fellow a little over a year ago. Barto is her married name....LOL!
