Oh now I see, the deadline has already passed for the shuttle? Maybe he can still try to get your name in and if not the taxi is still a good option.
I would suggest to everyone to get there the day before if possible, if they say the shuttle for the USO is running from 8am to 2pm..... There's a possibility that flights get delayed and stuff happens, when talking with the IKE Family Readiness Group, they suggested to fly in or drive in the day before your planning to depart on the cruise, get some rest at your hotel and then make your way to the TC location, this way your not extremely rushed and you are somewhat rested (as much as you can be since I know I wouldn't get a wink of sleep because I would be way too excited!) and as long as your on the list for the USO shuttle, it doesn't matter what day you fly in as long as your there to get on the bus and your sailor has given them your name....also why not it's free. :)
IKE's posting, copied below, says we need to arrive between 9 am and 3 pm.
And congratulations to all sailors on their promotion -- including my son!
Hi Amber,
I am aware of the USO shuttle option. The email my sailor sent indicated he needed to respond by Saturday if we wanted to use the shuttle service. The airline connections aren't so hot so since I don't know the hours for embarking, I don't know if I can fly there the same day and therefore don't know if the shuttle will work for me or not. That's why I am planning to fly in the day before.
Thanks for the tip on base access for taxi service!
Snail Mail Today YIPEEEE
Ralph: as in the post that you copied from the IKE site on facebook, you can take a USO shuttle from the airport to the ship (from what I hear is a 45 min drive) Remember most hotels have free shuttles to the airports. Other than that I would recommend a taxi but remember not all taxi services have base access, when calling ask if they have access to drive onto the base...Otherwise they will drop you off at the gate and nobody wants to walk with their luggage. I would definitely take advantage of free shuttle services. Your sailor must sign you up for the USO shuttle so make sure if that's what you plan on doing to get ahold of them ASAP so they can get you on the list. I'm pretty jealous y'all get to do this, ever since I found out that they did this I have wanted to go, truly not something that most people get to experience!
We have not gotten the final schedule yet, but I am planning to travel the day before embarking, spending the night in a hotel, and getting to the ship. Anyone interested in sharing transportation from the airport or to the ship?
Any one else from the Chicagoland area heading to the Tiger Cruise?
thanks Ralph...I was at work and don't have access to most sites....ND is the exception!!!
2013 IKE TIGER CRUISE NEWS
- Planning for Tiger Cruise 2013 is in full swing! The dates and locations have been given to the entire crew by the Commanding Officer. Your Sailors have been instructed to mail an invitation letter home that gives the exact dates and location. Since Operational Security (OPSEC) is always a concern for the US Navy, dates will only be provided by the sponsor via US mail or by attending the FRG meetings.
- If you are a Tiger, you should have already received information from your Sponsor and filled out/returned the Registration and Medical Screening forms. Please remember to use good OPSEC whenever you discuss any information about ship's movements, and don't discuss exact dates or locations over the phone, internet, or email.
- The pier at the EMBARKATION LOCATION will be staffed from 8am until the ship departs on the EMBARKATION DATE, and Tigers are asked to be at the pier between 9am and 3pm to allow time for registration and embarkation. There will be tents, chairs, tables, restrooms, water and lunch served at the pier.
- Charter Bus Service: The ship is arranging for a one-way charter bus from Norfolk to the embarkation port that will depart the evening prior to embarkation then arrive the next morning at the pier. Please let your sponsor know as soon as possible if you'd like to use this service to get down to meet the ship.
* Cost: $100, paid by sponsor with registration fee
* No unaccompanied minors - minors must have a designated adult Tiger-escort pre-arranged by the Sponsor(s).
* Exact details will be provided to the Sponsor to send out to Tigers once they are available.
- Shuttle service: The ship will be providing shuttles from the USO at the EMBARKATION International Airport (first floor, near the escalators) to the embarkation port based on anticipated demand, so Tigers need to let Sponsors know when they will arrive and if they need the shuttle.
* Shuttles will only run on the EMBARKATION DATE.
* Shuttles will run continuously from 8am until 2pm on the day of embarkation.
* It is still ultimately the responsibility of the Tiger to get to the embarkation location, so if shuttles are not available they should stil be prepared to take a taxi cab if necessary.
- For questions, please contact your Sponsor. Expect emails very soon from your Sponsor with answers to Frequently Asked Questions as well as additional packing and event information. Please remember to use good OPSEC whenever you correspond with your Sponsor!
- We can’t wait to have you aboard soon!
