You know now that my husband is back I kind of wish he would not have had to come back earlier than the boat and I'm even more upset that the boat turned around. They don't know anything though so they really don't know what to tell you all

I got word that all are on board heading home, but there could still be a DET for some.  Let's keep our fingers crossed that there will be no
DET.

He may be extremely busy with all the preperations for home port but if you want to get ahold of someone I would contact the Ike Ombudsman at ikeombudsman@gmail.com I wouldn't go through the red cross because im not sure if they would help since it's not an emergency situation and soon as he sees the chaplian comming his way he's going to think that something horrible happened and probally freak him out. I don't know how much help I have really been...I hope you get to hear from him very soon!!

Thanks Amber. We haven't heard from him since November 8th, so are trying to plan without the critical info we could probably get from him. His mom is about ready to enlist someone's help to get in touch with him.

James, I'm not sure my husband works down by the Nukes and being the guys that deal with the main propulsion of the ship...from what i have experienced with underways, My husband has never been let off right after pulling in... It takes them a while to shut everything down and hook up to shore power.  In fact my husband has duty that day and will not be allowed to leave the ship. I am happy to see that I am allowed to have dinner with him (if he's not on watch). I know Im probally not much help... Best thing to do is contact your sailor via e-mail and see what he/she has to say.

I hear the nukes de-board about 4 hours after everyone else. Does this mean they aren't allowed to be watching the crowd as they pull into port? In other words- is there any reason to make a banner for a Nuke?

Hello IKE Five Star Families,
Here is a message that was shared with our sailors by Capt. Hitchcock.

Shipmates,
Here are a few items of interest that you may want to share with your family and friends regarding the ships return to homeport:
*        There will be a Children's Christmas Holiday party held at Oceana's Aerotheatre & 'Old Gym' on December 15th, from 11-3pm.
*        There will be a Homecoming Preparations event that will be held at Vista Point on Norfolk Base, Thursday, 20 December, 1754 Massey Hughes Dr., Bldg. Q-88, from 5:00 - 8:00pm.  This will be a great event to get some additional information about IKE's return home.  New moms will be able to receive a wristband for access to the "New Moms" tent. The Family Readiness Group will provide homecoming information such as; parking, gate access, and the date and time when IKE will be expected to be pier side.  This will be the perfect opportunity to address any questions or concerns you may have.  Enter and exit Norfolk Naval Base through GATE 2, with Photo ID for all adults.
*        The homecoming event is handicap accessible.
*        Any person attending the homecoming without a military ID must enter Norfolk Base through gate 2 or 3A.  All adults must provide valid photo ID. Vehicle tags and registrations are required to be valid and up-to-date in order for security to grant access on base.  For persons with a valid military ID and decals, they will be able to go through any gate.
It is likely to be windy and cold on the pier, please remember
to dress accordingly.  There will be a radio station/DJ w/entertaining
and tasteful music. There will be vendors such as Taco Bell,
Chick-fil-A, Red Bull, etc.. and children activities available at the
hospitality ten. For young children you may bring snacks and change of
clothes.

*        If your Sailor has duty, once all other Sailors are off of the
ship you may contact the ship's quarter deck, and be permitted to have
dinner with your Sailor.

*        Items that are permitted on the pier: Family friendly signs,
camera, video camera's, cell phone (cell phone use is prohibited while
driving on base), small purses and diaper bags (are subject to check),
folding chairs, binoculars. Smoking will be permitted in designated
smoking areas only.

* Items that are prohibited: No balloons, alcohol, coolers, pets
(service dogs are allowed) and absolutely no weapons of any kind.

*        The Family Readiness Group looks forward to making IKE's
homecoming a joyful and memorable experience. If you have any questions
or concerns about Homecoming Preparation events or homecoming please do
not hesitate to contact them via e-mail at ikefrg@yahoo.com.

All the best,

Captain Hitchcock

Many times, I have been the one, standing on the ship scanning the crowd. Looking for that one person amidst a crowd of color and signs and people.
My best advice, decide on a sign pattern that will set you apart. Something that applies to you and the sailor. I am going to use an old nickname, one that I doubt anyone will have. With all the color something not neon may stand out.
I was greeted, one time, with a 20 foot long banner that could be seen hundreds of feet away. I could not identify the person but knew it was for me!

Looking for suggestions on how to find one sailor amoung thousands of people, besides cell phones.  Need a good back up plan.
