During my 20 year navy career, I spent three years on the IKE and also two years on the STENNIS, so if anyone has any questions about carrier life (or any Navy questions at all), feel free to ask away.

Well, my son sent a text this am and it is official.  He had hard copy of orders to the Ike.  Reporting Jan 13th wherever they are.

So it looks like he is a DC.  He should do ok at least he was able to go to A School.  My son went aboard the Stennis as an undesignated Airman and was on the hanger deck for 5 years and made 3 deployments.  From what I have been reading, it looks like they are in quals for deployment.  Not having a sponsor on the boat yet it will be hard to get any info on their schedule.  I don't think he will actually report til Jan 13th.

Thanks Paul.  The biggest thing I can say right now about the Navy that is really hard to stay in if that is what you want.  My son took the test 3 times before making it and he was getting close - his EAOS is in March and he had already been turned down on his first PTS. We have really enjoyed his duty in Meridian.  He can come home (Birmingham) any weekend without taking leave.

New to group.  My son will report in January.  He is currently finishing a 2 year shore duty in Meridian MS.  Served 5 years on the Stennis.  Just made ABH2.  Getting married in September before heading to Pensacola for C school for 6 weeks (not sure what that entails, I guess because he has been ashore for 2 years).  Will re-enlisting for the second time.

My sailor is on the Ike. He likes it but there is a lot of down time. I would like to chat with other dads who have sons/daughters on the Ike.

I found this about PACT program....the A stands for AVIATION.

Navy’s New PACT With Undesignated Sailors

By Mass Communication Specialist Seaman Apprentice Philip Schrickel, USS Carl Vinson Public Affairs

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (NNS) -- The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) will be transitioning its general detailed (GENDET) workforce to an effective general apprentice program along with the rest of the fleet in fiscal year 2008 (FY-08).

Professional Apprenticeship Career Tracks (PACT) is a program designed to enlist Sailors into a monitored general apprenticeship program that provides Apprentice level formal training and on the job training that leads to a viable career field within two years on board their first Permanent Duty Station. Undesignated Seamen will be accessed into the PACT Program commencing FY-08. Apprentice Airmen and Firemen will participate in FY-09.

“PACT will help us break Sailor’s careers down in order to help them know where they are headed,” said Chief Navy Counselor (AW/SW) Jeff Sabia, of Carl Vinson’s command career counselor office. “We will be able to keep track of the Sailor’s progress and where their career takes them.”

According to the Navy Counselors Association (NCA), one of the main focuses of PACT is emphasizing a two-way commitment between the Sailor and the Navy. By implementing aviation (A-PACT), engineering (E-PACT), and surface (S-PACT) professional apprenticeship career tracks, the NCA has asserted that the Navy will be able to better assist in the personal and professional development of its Sailors. The Career Information Management System (CIMS) will be used to monitor Career Development Boards and Fleet RIDE rating eligibility screening will continue to be mandated to ensure PACT Sailors are placed into career paths they are eligible for.

“As a career counselor, I personally look forward to watching the development and working with the Sailors who will be enrolled in the PACT program,” said Operations Specialist 2nd Class Keri Childs.

Carl Vinson is currently undergoing its scheduled refueling complex overhaul (RCOH) at Northrop Grumman Newport News shipyard. The RCOH is an extensive yard period that all Nimitz-class aircraft carriers go through near the mid-point of their 50-year life cycle.

During RCOH, Carl Vinson’s nuclear fuel will be replenished and the ship’s services and infrastructure will be upgraded to make her the most state-of-the-art aircraft carrier in the fleet and prepare for another 25 years or more of service.
