After 14 mos on the GW,  the emails and phone calls home seem to have slowed to a slow trickle.  He says he is reaally busy and rarely complains. I am taking this as a good sign, that my son has made the adjustment to Navy life. Anyone else experience this ?

Wishing all of you a very Merry Christmas.  We may be a long way away from our sailors but they are with us in our hearts.

My son, Aaron, was in NY...just wondering if maybe they knew each other but it sounds like there was quite a difference in time between them.

Jim, he went to prototype in SC. We were hoping for NY as it is only 200 miles from us

As I recall,  my son had to stay on the barge until he completed indoc and he completed his qualifications on the ship. I know my son was very motivated to complete his qualifications asap.  He now lives on base with 3 roomates.  The trade off was it only took him a few minutes to get to work (the GW) from the barge.  Now that he is in base housing it is a long walk to the ship, plus now he has to wait in a long line with everyone else to get on the ship.  His version of rush hour traffic....  haha

John, did your son go to prototype in NY or SC?

Hi Jim.  When we spoke to Nick last Sat he said he still had about 15 weeks of qualification.  He started the process on the 27th of October and he got on the ship the 21st of Nov, right before they left port. I guess he is still living on the ship, he was suppose to get some type of off ship housing next week, but that was put on hold. Nick also is working on Christmas Eve, which is right now for them.

He also let me know that he has duty (Barge watch) on Christmas Day...

Been there, done that!

My son is also an MM3 Nuke, still in Indoc.  I was able to chat with him for a short while on Facebook yesterday, and he seems to be adjusting well to life in Japan.  He is looking forward to getting on the ship and qualifying.

Being new at this, so I assume that this is a good sign right now.  Just got a text from Nick asking what time he can call us on Saturday.
