Cora, Garrett asked which command Brooklyn was in, the only info I had was Airwing 5 VAQ 136, and she was a PC wearing brown shirts. If there is something else I should have said about her command, let me know. He may try to look her up, but in a week or two when the USS Shiloh joins them, he will fly off to be one of the few rescue swimmers for the Helo it has. He hopes the Shiloh follows the GW because when he completes his TSO he needs to fly back on the GW to stand boards.

from my recent post in the group Career Planning--- it is pretty depressing to be in the Navy anymore:

Navy-wide, there is a 16.42 percent chance to advance, with 88,715 sailors passing their tests and 14,570 quotas available to move up. That is down from 19.86 percent last fall and a 24.08 percent chance just a year ago.

Part of the problem is more competition, with 1,758 more sailors passing their tests than the 86,957 who passed in September, and 2,740 more than a year ago, when 85,975 became eligible to advance by passing advancement exams.

But the real killer is fewer quotas, down 2,808 from the 17,378 available slots to move up last fall. That’s also 6,087 fewer than last year’s spring cycle, when 20,657 got a new chevron.

According to Navy Times 88,715 sailors passed with only 14,570 openings for advancement. That's got to be real dissappointing to those who pass but don't advance.

Cora, can you check for me about Garrett? He tried for Petty Officeer 2nd Class. I am not on Facebook. Thanks!

Cora, don't you just love the fantastic postings on the FB GW site! I look there daily for the updates. This is ever so much better than the times when they headed out to sea and families had no clue at all.

I don't know if my granddaughter will be on the flight deck much because she is so new at her job. She is a "green shirt."

Wishing all on the GW "Fair winds and following seas."

A quick note to say I posted some pics of my daughter's wedding to her Marine as she prepares to go to OCS herself June 3. I got all choked up saying the toast, especially when I had to announce my son missing this out on the USS Geaorge Washington which I was interrupted with appluse honoring him, then saying the e-mail he sent the night before for me to say to his sister. Afterwards, I asked all current and former military to stand, and before I could ask, the whole place erupted in thunderous applause. It was the hardest speech I have ever made, but I am so glad I did. I don't know, maybe I can post it somehow. Regardless, a moment to remember!

for a lot of rates, 12-16 hour workdays are very common-

Glad you got it all sorted out. I heard from my son a few days ago as well and he said pretty much the same thing.

Question for the group - Is 16 hour days a normal work day when they are deployed, or is this just because they are going thru Carrier Qualifications, Sea Trials, etc..

Thanks guys! He did email me the other day (finally) with his shipping address (and email address) obviously! It was nice hearing from him. He says he's working 16 hour days, but he's enjoying it. So far, so good!
