Well, as life is dynamic, my son's advancement has "passed the grid" and he has been assigned to another part of the world. After a full and honorable period of serving on the USS George Washington, he is, as of this writing, in Norfolk, assigned to the USS Bataan. That is an especially special source of pride as we birthed James at home in Mesilla, New Mexico (on purpose). Our family has been in that area (Las Cruces, NM/El Paso, TX) since 1886. As background on a bit of history about Bataan:
About 80% of the American forces that fought the 3 month long battle in 1942 were ranchers, farmers and plain folk from New Mexico. They faced starvation when supplies were cut off, to the point of emaciation, but kept fighting alongside Filipino forces until the ordered surrender to save who was left. Those who were captured and forced march to the POW camp suffered great brutality until the survivors were rescued by McArthur 3 years later.
I grew up with the children and grandchildren of those at Bataan. James has the distinct honor in the history of the USS Bataan of being a true Son of the Rio Grande to serve on her. As he told me (in so many words), "Dad, I just want to help my Band of Brothers make it to their beach parties in whatever capacity I can". God bless them! Thanks for support and adios y'all...
nicely said Ric !!!!
God bless all of you and our families as we pray together for the safe passage and protection all of our daughters, sons, mothers, fathers, family members and friends as they embark. My son was able to obtain a long needed short leave stateside last March and see his daughters for a week. He managed to come to my part of the country for 20 hours, after not seeing each other for over 6 years. Yeah it burns inside as a slow smolder and we live with it, as we counter that with the pride we carry for the life they have chosen, but that angst just gnaws away as I turn to prayer - I have no place left to turn. I pray not one scratch on any and all involved in this endeavor. God bless all of you.
Ric
