Mitch, you will get that phone call, maybe a couple as this is a long haul to get to the HST right now. However, your son will need to take care of some things right away, so you may not hear from him the minute he goes aboard. Remember when they told you no news is good news when he was in boot camp? ....Same thing applies now. His sponsor will at some point make sure he contacts you to let you know he is OK and hard at it! Is he in Norfolk yet?

Does anyone know if they will be able to give an "I made it ok" phonecall or email when they make it to the ship?

Whoa....a bubblehead. No way, no way, that was not for me. They tried that with me. After two hours on board the sub.... I knew that was not gonna happen. The doorways are too small!! LOL!!! Besides, I had this irresistible urge to hold my breath all the time... Just kidding. I do however have the utmost respect for those sailors who choose sub duty. Good luck to him. Our MCPON is a sub man as was Pres Carter, so he has some good company to be in. Takes a rare breed to do that duty.

Thanks for all the info! Otto we are in Illinois also. (Chicagoland) This journey is going to be exciting for all! And with our oldest enlisting a week and a half ago, it will be expanding. He leaves for bootcamp in a few weeks! He will be a submarine man!

Yea, it's that stretch from NYC to were ever that takes so long. Ditto on the customs forms. I share your opinion on the countries involved, but that's a discussion for other boards.

Otto - I hear you. I know the Post Office gets it to NYC very fast from where I am. I have not used a delivery confirmation yet and will not, thanks for the info. I fill out the Customs form the same way, everytime...Contents: Candy, Value: $15.00. It is none of their business what a parent sends their military child sitting inside or outside some Third world filth-hole.

John, I think it is dependent on asset availability. Most of the boxes show up on the supply ships, and not by COD. I've had that happen as well. Must have been the same shipment, as one did take almost a month, LOL. In fact, I had a delivery confirmation on that box, and it still shows it not delivered! Go figure. BTW, I don't put confirmations on the boxes anymore, not worth the price. Insurance is different, depending on what is in the box.

I cannot figure out the combination of the US Post Office and US Navy and their delivery times either.
To get a 10-20 pound box to FPO, AE 09504 they must involve magicians at times. One box took almost one month and one was there in less than one week....almost like it had been placed on it's own personal plane and flown to him.

Mitch, forgot to mention the package delivery time is from here in Illinois. I am from central Illinois, so I base it on that.

Good point John about the email questions. Of course, much can not be discussed, but the essentials of "how you doing" are important to ask. Mitch, one thing I want you to stress to your son is once aboard and he gets his email account, to have you signed up for the Truman's FRG (Family Readiness Group) This is really important because you'll be able to get certain information that will not only be helpful, but give you the feeling of being more "connected" with your son and the ship. Go to the Truman website and read about FRG, and how you and your sailor become a part of the group. He has to initiate the connection, but after that, he doesn't have to do anything. And, there is always the Facebook page, which is also very informative and a "link" to your sailor. My son is pretty good about using email, so you should hear from your son quite often. And John and Bob are right about the care packages. Very, very important. Right now the average delivery time for a large Express mail box is 10 -14 days to their AOR. So time them appropriately. I try to make sure my son has at least two or three care packages per month. The FRG has a lot of useful info on what and how to send the boxes, as does this site. Good luck, and keep asking questions. That's what this site is for.
