We just got back from Virginia this week.  Had a great time visiting our Sailor and we got a personal tour of the Truman and we were able to get to the USS Wisconsin - also did the Harbor Cruise.  (The first picture is on the Wisconsin & the 2nd is on the flight deck of the Truman.)  We spent more time in VA Beach where he lives but did get to other areas too.  Also went to a Norfolk Tides baseball game.  And of course visited the NEX.  It was hot & humid but we had fun!

Try to get to it on your next visit.....those 16" guns are most impressive!

WE stayed at the downtown Courtyard Marriott and the Wisconsin was only a couple of blocks away (we drove right by it several times).  BUT, our sailor emphatically told us he wanted no part of a tour of that ship.  So no, not this time, but maybe in the future.

Hope you had time to tour the USS Wisconsin BB-64 while you were there....

Well, we are back from our visit to Norfolk and the Truman.  Arrived on Friday morning, picked up our sailor and headed immediately to the Truman Command Picnic at Dam Neck.  Then back to the Truman for a personal tour of the ship with our sailor as tour guide.  Very excited to actually be on the flight deck as well as several lower decks of the ship.  Immense pride at seeing all of the fleet at Norfolk as we drove past the piers.  Norfolk was nicer than expected (we stayed downtown) and traffic was not too bad.  We had a great weekend visit and then returned home on Monday morning.

Steve - we are going to be in Norfolk next week too!  So excited to see our sailor.  We just got back from vacation in Mammoth & on Saturday sailor called & said his leave was approved for next week.  So repack the bags & we are heading out to VA....Luckily we were able to get off work again ;-)  We also are looking forward to getting a tour of the ship.  Sailor said he would check with his LPO to find out the best way to do it....our sailor will be with us when we go on base so hopefully there won't be any issues.

Marvin, thanks for the reply.  This isn't a formal tour as I understand it, and our son will not be with at the gate.  We are supposed to meet him at the Truman.  Based on our experience with Ft. Knox (we live close by) I will be surprised if they just let us drive through and go to the ship.  Maybe they will, I don't know.

Steve I was there few months ago visiting. I road in threw the gate with my son. Never got checked. But there wasn't a tour at the time.

Ok, can anyone help with this one?  We are traveling to Norfolk next week to visit with our son.  He has told us we can have a "tour"of the Truman on Friday and assumes that we can pass through the main gate to the pier where the Truman is docked.  I have my doubts that they will just let us through to drive to the Truman without some sort of authorization (if at all).  Does anyone have experience with this at Norfolk and can you advise as to how to accomplish this visit.

Thanks.

Hi all - Happy Wednesday!  Here's a good article that was posted in the Navy Times yesterday.
