EG, thank you for sharing Evan's story about Biden's visit. Check out the link below to see a video of Biden's visit to the Reagan.

Paige my son called and told me about Biden visiting his ship. He said that Joe and his wife were awesome. Evan said they talked about their son that is deployed and told the Reagan's Sailors that they are proud parents just like us. Evan thought it was cool that the vice president is in the same boat as us other parents with children serving. He said the Sailors really enjoyed their visit.

NNS090514-14. Vice President Biden Visits USS Ronald Reagan

By Mass Communication Specialist Seaman Alexander Tidd

SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- The vice president and his wife visited USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) May 14 as part of a familiarization tour of naval facilities in the San Diego area.

During his visit, Vice President Joe Biden commented on the Ronald Reagan Strike Group's successful 2008 deployment, which included humanitarian assistance in the Philippines and combat operations in Afghanistan.

"You are agile, capable in a variety of missions, and you're brave enough to succeed every time you are deployed," Biden told the 2,000 Sailors.

"A grateful nation owes you."

Much to the delight of the crew, the vice president and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, sat down for lunch with Ronald Reagan Sailors after his speech.

"It's exciting; a once-in-a-lifetime experience," said Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Equipment) Airman Elizabeth Irby. "I was speechless when he sat down with us. He was intriguing and inspirational."

"Having the vice president visit is something I wouldn't get to do in any other job," added Machinist's Mate Fireman Alecia Guerrera. "It's nice to hear his support for the military and Reagan in particular."

The vice president posed for hundreds of photos with Sailors, thanking them individually for their service.

"I hope you all realize how much we support you," he said.

Dr. Biden, who along with First Lady Michelle Obama is a staunch advocate of military families, was scheduled to meet with area ombudsmen to discuss family readiness issues.

"Your loved ones will not be alone when you deploy," she told the Ronald Reagan crew. "Your country appreciates your courage and strength."

USS Ronald Reagan is the flagship of Carrier Strike Group 7 and the ninth of 10 Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. The ship is named for the 40th president, its motto, "Peace through Strength," was a recurring theme during the Reagan presidency.

Well Paige tell him not to worry. When Evan arrived in S.D. the Reagan was 3 months into it's cruise. They flew Evan to the ship to finish out the last 3. So he might get a chance to make that cruise. I believe they take back out around late May for 4 or 5 months. It really is a great strike group. Looking forward to sharing info with you in here.

EG,
He actually arrived in San Diego on Mar. 6th. He received orders for 4 C-Schools also in SD which will keep him busy until the end of Sept. He's hoping that the Howard is not out at sea when he finishes school. He's real anxious to report to duty and try out his sea legs. He's never been on anything larger than a lake, so what an experience it will be for him!!

I'm glad to have you with us Paige. It has been lonely in here. Strike Group 7, I hear is the best the Navy has. Just don't tell the others, they might get jealous. When is Billy headed to San Diego?
Comment by Paige on March 27, 2009 at 6:43pm
I just learned from Billy today and from Paul's informative posting below that Billy's soon to be home the USS Howard (DDG83) is part of the Carrier Strike Group 7. The USS Ronald Reagan group will be an added source of info for me, so I hope you all don't mind me joining the group!!

Some News:

Ronald Reagan Strike Group Completes SUSTAINEX
Story Number: NNS090327-03
Release Date: 3/27/2009 7:21:00 AM

By USS Ronald Reagan Public Affairs

SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- The crew of USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) completed its sustainment exercise (SUSTAINEX) and returned to Naval Air Station North Island, Calif., Mar. 26.

The Nimitz-class nuclear powered aircraft carrier completed SUSTAINEX along with embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 14, the guided-missile cruiser USS Chancellorsville (CG 62), the guided-missile destroyers USS Howard (DDG 83) and USS Gridley (DDG 101) and the guided-missile frigate USS Thach (FFG 43).

SUSTAINEX is the last coordinated exercise involving the ships of Carrier Strike Group 7 prior to its upcoming deployment later this year.

"It was a great underway for our Sailors," said Capt. Kenneth Norton, Ronald Reagan's commanding officer. "Even though we had been apart for a few months, it didn't take long for the Ronald Reagan-Air Wing 14 team to start humming like a well-oiled machine."

According to Senior Chief Aviation Boatswain's Mate Equipment (AW/SW) Robert Everson of the ship's Air Department, Ronald Reagan conducted more than 1,000 launch and recoveries of aircraft, all while preparing hundreds of new Sailors for their first deployment aboard.

"This underway has prepared them a great deal," said Everson. "With the turnover since last deployment, we have a lot of new Sailors. It gives them a little bit of a vision of what they're going to be facing in the months to come."

SUSTAINEX put the ships together for several coordinated evolutions, including maritime security operations (MSO) and testing air defense and anti-submarine warfare proficiencies. The exercise also proved very valuable from a command-and-control standpoint.

"There were some skills we had to fine tune early on, but all units quickly came on step, and we were able to achieve all training objectives," said Capt. William Nault, commodore of Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 7. "I have full confidence that we are ready to deploy."

For the flagship, one key qualification was achieved. According to Capt. Thomas Lalor, Commander, CVW-14, USS Ronald Reagan and CVW-14 have requalified as blue-water capable, meaning the ship can now sail into deep waters and conduct flight operations.

USS Ronald Reagan is the flagship of Carrier Strike Group 7 and the ninth of ten Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. The ship is named for the 40th president; its motto, "Peace through Strength," was a recurring theme during the Reagan presidency.

Bravo USS Ronald Reagan:

USS Ronald Reagan to be Featured on Cover of Muscle and Fitness Magazine
Story Number: NNS081222-11
Release Date: 12/22/2008 11:59:00 AM

From Muscle and Fitness and USS Ronald Reagan Public Affairs

SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Sailors from USS Ronald Reagan and Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 14, who just returned home after a six-month deployment, will be featured in an exclusive cover feature in the February issue of Muscle and Fitness magazine, which hits newsstands December 22.

A crew from Muscle & Fitness caught up with Ronald Reagan in September while the ship was conducting flight operations in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in the Gulf of Oman.

Ronald Reagan and CVW-14 Sailors were photographed and interviewed during and after their workout regimens. Muscle and Fitness also were interested in the ship's wellness program, including dietary considerations and a full-time fitness and wellness coordinator, or "Fit Boss."

"We're trying to redefine the fitness culture of the ship," said Ronald Reagan Fit Boss Britt Callison, a civilian contractor and certified personal trainer who has helped to develop several classes and group fitness programs to encourage regular exercise at sea.

"In the real world, it's hard enough to schedule time for the gym," said M&F senior editor Eric Velazquez. "But when your job requires physically carrying around 500-pound bombs or pulling injured pilots out of harm's way, getting and staying fit takes on a whole new meaning. Our three days at sea with them were incredibly inspiring."

One Sailor featured in the magazine is Aviation Boatswain's Mate 3rd Class Eric Olmstead, a former champion power-lifter who now has a heavy responsibility working with the ship's arresting gear.

"My job can be very physical at times, for sure," he said. "It was really cool to be interviewed and photographed by Muscle and Fitness; power-lifting and staying in shape are part of my daily routine, especially out at sea."

Featured on the cover is Lt. Zach Scheetz, who led the ship's embarked explosive ordnance disposal detachment. A video compilation of M&F's stint at sea, as well as exclusive photo galleries, will also be available online at www.muscleandfitness.com.
