Hey Walter, my guess is that there will be special care taken of the Sailors and Marines who have to remain on board the ship over Christmas. They did a great job with that sort of thing during the recent Tiger Cruise I went on and in talking to my son he said that the Navy tries to do special things from time to time, especially in times when families would normally be together, like Christmas!
My sons first Christmas away. Any special dinners or events planned for those still on board? I guess we just want him to have a good day. Thanks
posted today on the RR's FB page:
Just a quick update- We are indeed getting email while we are out here, although due to the lower bandwidth that we have right now, it may take it a bit longer for email to come and go. Please be patient with us! We'll try to post our week in photos here soon! stay tuned!
If anyone should run across pictures from the 2011 photoex with CVN-76 and CVN-73 let me know please
Thanks Paul! Much appreciated.
My son is in the Reactor Dept. and I note that there is a Red E with three lines underneath it. I'm proud of this ship, it's got a great history and tradition. The link below from the RR Facebook page also mentions the highlights of this deployment and per the Captain:
"A very successful reactor safeguards exam and material management inspection proved our readiness, and showed just how far we've come."
A note from the Commanding Officer, Capt Thom Burkeby USS Ronald Re...
The letters painted on the ship's bridge wings are known as Command Excellence Awards. These awards mean that the ship that bears them has proven to be superior in a certain field of operations. The probably most important award is the Battle E. There is only one Battle E award per squadron and only one ship in the squadron wins it every year. The Battle E award shows that the ship that bears it has proven to be superior in ship handling, weapons employment, tactics and ability to fulfill mission objectives. The importance of the Battle E is also represented by its appearance: The white E is twice as large as the 'common' E's and it's the only award with shadow. But all this does not mean that the other awards are unimportant: A lot of the training aboard a ship during the year is not only to maintain proficiency, but to try and win these awards.
The varying colors tend to represent different departments aboard the ship while the varying letters represent different activities.
Awards are only valid for one year. Afterwards they have to be removed if the unit does not qualify for the award again. If a unit won an award and qualified for the same award the next year, the first award is underlined (service stripes). So if a unit bears a triply underlined E, the unit has won the award in four consecutive years. Instead of the letter and four service stripes for winning the award five consecutive times, in the case of the Battle "E", a gold "E" shall be displayed with a silver star above the "E". In the case of the command excellence awards, an "E" and a star of the same color will be shown for the fifth consecutive award, replacing the service stripes. Another star shall be added for each five successive annual awards.
All awards, except the Battle E, are 20 inches in length and 25 inches in height without shadow.

What do the letters "SWESEEMDCECSEE" on the top of the superstructure mean?
The Tiger Cruise was a lot of fun!!! One thing I will have to remember the next time is to wash my hands several times a day... With that many people in one place, you are bound to get the "Cruds". Well that's what my Sailor called the runny nose, scratchy throat, etc...
The Tiger Cruise was fantastic! We embarked in Honolulu and sailed to San Diego with some of the Navy's finest! It gave me a greater appreciation of all the things our men and women in uniform do do help this great country of ours remian great AND free! Thanks to everyone who supported having a bunch of Tigers aboard The USS Ronald Reagan CVN-76!
