Story Number: NNS131016-06Release Date: 10/16/2013 3:17:00 PM
From U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa, U.S. 6th Fleet Public Affairs
NAPLES, Italy (NNS) -- At the request of the Maltese government, the amphibious transport dock ship USS San Antonio (LPD 17) rendered assistance Oct. 16 to persons in distress at sea in the central Mediterranean.
Winds and seas were rocking the raft when it was spotted by a Maltese patrol aircraft. Shortly thereafter, the Maltese government contacted several ships in the area, as well as U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, and requested assistance in rescuing the distressed persons.
San Antonio was a little more than 60 nautical miles away when she was directed to assist, and arrived on scene at approximately 6 p.m. local time. Soon after, her crew began transferring the individuals using two 11-man rigid hull inflatable boats.
In all, 128 men between the ages of 20 and 30 were rescued from the raft. San Antonio provided food, water, medical attention, and temporary shelter to all.
Assistance efforts were ongoing as this story was updated at 3:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
My e-mail to Gail on 9-15
I read on Navy Dads that the SA transited the canal again??? Did not see it anywhere else though.
Gail’s answer on 9-16
No we haven't transited any canal. That might be the San Jancito, a lot
of people out here get our ships confused cause they are SJA and we are
SAN. Just one of those things.
The amphibious transport dock ship USS San Antonio (LPD 17) transits the Suez Canal. San Antonio is deployed as part of the Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group with embarked Marines from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (26th MEU) supporting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility. Story Number: NNS130904-04Release Date: 9/4/2013 10:38:00 AM
From Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet Public Affairs
HAIFA, Israel (NNS) -- Sailors and Marines aboard the amphibious transport dock ship USS San Antonio (LPD 17) arrived in Haifa, Israel for a routine port visit, Sept. 4.
San Antonio's commanding officer, Capt. Randell Dykes, said this visit is a well-deserved break for Sailors and Marines, and for many is the first time they have visited Israel.
"If you've been here, you know what a great country Israel is," said Dykes. "I know our Sailors and Marines will have a great time. They certainly deserve it after all the hard work they've put in on this deployment."
While in Haifa, Sailors and Marines will have the opportunity to explore the city and to experience the rich history and culture of Israel. Tours are being offered to the Sailors and Marines to historic locations while in port.
San Antonio is part of the Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group and, with the embarked 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, is deployed in support of maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility.
My son is on this ship currently I am very proud of him. He is a GMSN.
MY SON SHOULD BE ASSIGNED TO THIS SHIP IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS. ANYONE ELSE?
