Northrop Wins $5.87 Billion in U.S. Defense Contracts (Update1)

Aug. 26 (Bloomberg) -- Northrop Grumman Corp., the U.S. Navy’s largest warship builder, won two Pentagon contracts valued at a combined $5.87 billion to provide maintenance and upgrade services for a ship and a fleet of stealth aircraft it built.

Northrop won a $3.44 billion contract from the U.S. Air Force to support the B-2 bomber fleet, the Defense Department announced today on its Web site. Separately, Northrop received a $2.43 billon Navy order to refuel the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt.

The Roosevelt will be the fourth ship of the Nimitz class to undergo refueling of its nuclear reactor along with a three- year overhaul that is performed only once during a carrier’s 50- year-life span, the company said in a statement. Los Angeles- based Northrop is the only builder of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers for the U.S. Navy. It also makes the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, which can fly more than 6,000 nautical miles without refueling and use stealth to penetrate protected airspace.

Northrop rose 93 cents, or 1.9 percent, to $49.83 at 5:48 p.m. in electronic trading after the close of the New York Stock Exchange. The company had total sales of $33.9 billion last year.

Dan made it home Saturday morning, he's glad schools over and ready to head to the Theodore Roosevelt even though its dry docked for 40 months. He says he'll get it going sooner (HA HA).

Cross-decking is not the easiest thing in the world right now because of the the high retention rates. All he can do is talk to his Chief and see where it goes I would guess.

My son was just assigned to the USS Theodore Roosevelt, if it is going into repairs for 40 months what is he supposed to do. He is rather upset over this, he just spent nearly 2 years in school to go to sea and now he won't go for almost 4 years which is when he is supposed to get out. If he stays assigned to the USS TR odds are he will not reenlist. Is there anyway for him to get assigned to a different ship?

NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- Sailors aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) began a shipboard coordinated off-load and outfitting plan (SCOOP) at Naval Station Norfolk June 15.

The SCOOP process involves unloading all shipboard equipment, furniture and tools not welded, wired or piped into place.

"Things that we can use again will be kept; everything else will be [disposed of]," said Chief Machinist's Mate (SW/AW/SS) Michael Wilson, Theodore Roosevelt's (TR) maintenance, material and management coordinator.

Everything on the ship must be accounted for and inventoried to be placed in storage or transferred to the floating accommodation facility (FAF) before the scheduled 40-month refueling complex overhaul (RCOH) in October at Northrop Grumman Newport News shipyard.

"We've been planning SCOOP since January, and all departments are ready to begin this process," said Lt. Cmdr. Karen Dallas, TR's principal assistant for logistics and primary SCOOP coordinator.

A team of 100 Sailors from every department aboard the ship will be issued specialized computers to inventory equipment from their respective departments. Departmental personnel will pack the material and hand it over to civilian contractors for the move.

"Each department has its own SCOOP coordinator who is in charge of making sure the equipment is [in good working condition] and that it is accounted for properly with the computers," said Dallas.

The medical department will be the first to have equipment removed from the ship, followed by the supply department.

"It's important for medical to SCOOP their equipment first, as they need to have services for the crew set up on the FAF," said Dallas. "Supply will move next to provide meals on the FAF."

SCOOP will be the largest evolution conducted by the ship before it enters RCOH. Despite the immensity of the job, TR Sailors are more than ready to handle it.

"I think it will be great," said Dallas. "Everyone is excited and being proactive to get all the material off the ship. All hands have been actively involved in ensuring the process [goes well]."

Naval station visitors may experience slight delays in transiting near the naval station's waterfront with the additional equipment movements.

"Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes as we anticipate traffic delays along Decatur, said Lt. Jeff Eidenberger, a security officer at Naval Station Norfolk.

Well, they held a Family Day cruise today....Eric said about 3000-5000 people showed up with food, live music, coton candy, tons of stuff for sale, etc.. Guess it was pretty hectic!!

Kurtis--- working on 490 photos of the cruise right now.....till I get stuff sorted out...go to my page and I have 4 or 5 videos I've posted of the cruise and a number of blog posts as well....I'm currently working on part 3 of day 2....hopefully by this weekend I'll be ready to tackle Homecoming.........
