President of Afghanistan Visits USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71)

USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT, At Sea –Hamid Karzai, President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan flew aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) Dec. 11 for his first-ever visit to a U.S. aircraft carrier.


Karzai visited the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier at sea to gain a better understanding of how the U.S. Navy conducts operations in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF).


“Our forces are ready across the full spectrum of naval operations and are committed to continuing operations that help ensure security and stability in the region,” said Vice Adm. Bill Gortney, Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command. “President Karzai was able to see first hand the professionalism demonstrated by our personnel and gain a better understanding of how we do operations.”


Escorted by Gortney, President Karzai toured the flight deck and observed flight operations, as well as visited the ship’s bridge, an aircraft squadron’s ready room and the ship’s Combat Direction Center.


“President Karzai was very interested in learning more about the capabilities and support that Theodore Roosevelt and Carrier Air Wing-8 bring to OEF,” said Rear Adm. Frank Pandolfe, Commander, Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group. “We employ these capabilities every day to help the government of Afghanistan build a more peaceful and prosperous nation.”


The Navy is a crucial partner in supporting Coalition forces that operate on the ground, which help the government of Afghanistan establish a secure democracy for the people of Afghanistan.


“We were honored to host President Karzai today,” said Capt. Ladd Wheeler, Theodore Roosevelt’s Commanding Officer. “He was impressed with the Sailors he met as well as the dedication shown by them in the amazing work they do.”


Theodore Roosevelt and embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 8 are currently deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations, and are focused on reassuring regional partners of the United States' commitment to security, which promotes stability and global prosperity.

USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT, At Sea (NNS) -- USS Theodore Roosevelt (TR) (CVN 71) hosted Army Gen. David H. Petraeus, commander, U.S. Central Command, Nov. 27-28 to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday with the crew.

Petraeus, along with Commander 5th Fleet, Vice Adm. William E. Gortney, visited the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, currently deployed to the 5th Fleet area of responsibility.

"[I came here] to share Thanksgiving dinner with some shipmates and to re-enlist some great Sailors," said Petraeus. "The mission is very important. The skill and expertise of the members of the crew here are very impressive. It is a privilege to be out here on this ship on this special occasion to share Thanksgiving with all the members of the crew."

While aboard, Petraeus spoke to the senior enlisted leaders about operations in the area and thanked them for their service and continued support.

"He was straightforward and descriptive about challenges in our mission and explained how our support makes an impact in theatre," said Senior Chief Navy Counselor (AW/SW) Michael Sekeet of Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 8. "He was also supportive about the challenges we have in leadership and how it applies to our junior Sailors."

Petraeus observed several of TR's major activities before his departure including flight operations and a simultaneous vertical replenishment and connected replenishment with USNS Lewis and Clark (T-AKE 1) and USNS Tippecanoe (T-AO 199).

"[Sailors] should know how proud and appreciative the American citizens are of all they are doing while deployed around the world," said Petraeus. "The missions are hugely important. The American public knows that and they are very, very supportive. It should make everyone feel good about what it is they are engaged in and about those with whom they served."

The Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group is on deployment in the 5th Fleet area of responsibility, and are focused on reassuring regional partners of the United States' commitment to security, which promotes stability and global prosperity.

HooYah my friend on that! I've sent and invite to the site to eric and asked him to forward to his buds on the ship in hopes THEY would forward to their parents (Whew.....). Me thinks perhaps if we can get a few "Big Stick" dads all venturing to Norfolk we should think about a meet and greet or some such event......

Hello Paul, Kira did say the oher day that there have been some discussions on a Tiger Cruise and I like you are hopeful that it happens. Unfortunately, I will not be able to see what Kira does since she is a Nuke but, I am sure I will find something to do.

HooYa Fred! Eric hadn't mentioned the accidient- guess the flight deck deserves it's reputation as the most dngerous workplace in the world!

Sorry about the cool reception you got from the boss...sometimes they just don't understand! I hope to be there in Norfolk as I had to miss his deployment. The Lincoln just retuned to Everett about 2 weeks ago....Kat flew from Hawaii to Vegas to spend some time with her mom so no big homecoming for me....I was lucky enough to be in Everett when she sailed though so it kinda balances out! I sure would have liked to do a Tiger Cruise with her though! I don't know what the plans are for the Roosevelt so I still might get my chance!

I know it is probably a dumb question but, I expect that you will be in Norfolk when Eric returns next April? It would be a good oportunity to meet in person as I am sure to be there.

I am an IT and Facilities Manager for an add agency in St. Louis and we will moving our office around then. I have already told my boss that if the move happens to be at the same time that Kira is coming home that I will no be there to help. She said well we all have to make decisions in kinda of a stern tone. Well I can safely say that this will be a no-brainer for me as I will be there for Kira no matter what as family trumps work any day!!!
