Welcome Jim!
We have some new members--what is everyone's sailor doing? Mine on the TR for the second time- did cruise in '09 in the Tire/Wheel shop---this time with VAW-125 working on the E2D Advanced Hawkeye. after being stationed in Hawaii with HSM-37.
Hope everyone's sailors are staying warm and safe!
Bravo Zulu! COMPTUEX Complete!
TR Family,
As we pulled back into Norfolk for the very last time, I wanted to take a minute today and send out a hearty BRAVO ZULU to all our Rough Riders for so skillfully completing Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX)! TR truly knocked it out of the park and we are now, without a doubt, razor sharp and ready for deployment. To say I am proud of the entire team would be a significant understatement.
It has certainly been a jam-packed underway and while I will only be able to mention a few here, all our Sailors deserve recognition for what they have accomplished.
During COMPTUEX, Carrier Strike Group 12, TR, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 1, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 2 and USS NORMANDY came together to deftly complete a rigorous training program that challenged all of our capabilities throughout the spectrum of naval operations. The exercise simulated numerous real-world scenarios that we may encounter on deployment. The training was tough and pushed us to the limit, but the result is one cohesive Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group team, blue water certified and ready for independent operations worldwide. I also want to congratulate the DESRON 2 team for the successful completion of their ASW certification.
TR’s Supply team did a superb job once again as they underwent a Supply Management Inspection (SMI). Through their professionalism and dedication, they scored a 95 percent on SMI – the highest score ever for a carrier coming out of RCOH. I am extremely proud of our Supply team and not the least bit surprised at how well they represented TR. Well Done!
Supply also played a key role in putting together a fantastic Super Bowl party as we watched the big game out to sea for the second year in a row. MWR teamed up with the First Class Petty Officer Association, the Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions, and the Aviation Ordnancemen Association to organize the party, which featured numerous events in the hangar bay including bean-bag toss, sumo wrestling and music. There was a hot-wing eating contest on the mess decks, as well as a steady supply of snacks during the game. Thank you to everyone who made it possible. It was a very brief but well deserved chance to unwind.
I’d also like to thank Capt. Ben Hewlett, deputy commander of CVW 1, for piloting our F/A- 18 Super Hornet to record TR’s 200,000th aircraft arrested landing – a tremendous milestone for the ship. It was an honor to be a part of that event, which would have never been possible without the hard work and professionalism of everyone who makes flight operations possible. In particular, I’d like to recognize the Aviation Boatswain’s Mates (equipment) from V-2 who operate the ship’s arresting gear. We couldn’t do it without you. Well done and thanks shipmates.
It has truly been an incredible underway period made possible by the zeal, professionalism and the dogged efforts of the entire Rough Rider crew. A single note on Facebook simply does not do justice to the hard work demonstrated by the TR team, but I want each Rough Rider to know that their service is indispensible to the success of TR and the defense of the Nation. As we pull back in to Norfolk for the final time, please enjoy some well deserved time with your loved ones – you’ve earned it . Charge your batteries, ensure you have set those we leave behind up for success in our absence and then come back fired up and ready to deploy. To the families and friends of our Sailors – my sincere thank you. Your unwavering support is no less a service to our nation as our own, and sustains us through the tough times and reminds us why we serve.
Very Respectfully,
CO

Sailors aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) participate in a general quarters drill. Theodore Roosevelt is underway participating in a composite training unit exercise, which tests the ability of the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group to effectively react to real-world scenarios and perform as an integrated unit. Now how cool would that be....and a possible Hawaii-San Diego Tiger Cruise possibly too.....we could have a NavyDads-at-sea meeting!
My son can't wait to get on a carrier Paul! Who knows he may end up on the TR! :)
