USS Theodore Roosevelt CVN-71

Mission
USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) is a key element of our country's forward-deployed defense strategy. Tasked with maintaining open sea lanes of trade and communications, TR is capable of projecting air superiority to all points of the globe. The embarked Carrier Air Wing Eight aircraft serve as outstanding instruments of peace. Anytime and anywhere TR reports for duty, she brings 4.5 acres of sovreign U.S. territory and 97,000 tons of diplomacy. TR's equipment and crew are always maintained at the highest state of readiness. This enables the ship to carry out a wide variety of missions, including: air warfare, strike warfare, surface warfare, undersea warfare and electronic warfare. TR also shares the task of replenishing ships at sea and performing a variety of non-combat missions, such as the rescue at sea of people in distress and the transport of refugees and others in need of help. People make TR more than a mere mass of steel, cables and pipes. She is a floating city of 5,500 professional men and women from every state in the Union. It is the veteran Sailor with gold on his dress blues and the young 17-year old, away from home for the first time, who provide TR with heart and soul. Leadership, training and professionalism blend each of these individual personalities toward one goal ... being ready to exercise the power of TR in support of the "Forward Presence" mission of the U.S. Navy.

Welcome A. L., since the "Big Stick" has been in RCOH we haven't had much activity, and in all honesty, with my son no longer on the ship I'm outta touch with what is going on on the carrier.  Hopefully you'll be able to keep us informed as to what everyone is up to!!!

My son serves aboard the Stick.  He just finished a TAD crusie aboard Enterprise, which was my ship in the 70's, so you can imagine how excited I was to do the Tigre cruise with him.  An amazing experience after 40 years, but also a little unsetteling.  Very different navy today!

Photo Release -- Northrop Grumman Completes Propeller Installation on USS Theodore Roosevelt

NEWPORT NEWS, Va., Dec. 9, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation's (NYSE:NOC) Shipbuilding sector completed a significant milestone on the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) with the installation of the ship's propulsion shafting and propeller installation on Dec. 5.

A photo accompanying this release is available at http://media.globenewswire.com/noc/mediagallery.html?pkgid=8414

The carrier is undergoing a refueling and complex overhaul at the company's Shipbuilding sector in Newport News Va., the nation's sole designer, builder and refueler of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers.

"This is a significant accomplishment in a very large and complex project," said Todd West, CVN 71 program director for Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding-Newport News. "Installing the ship's propulsion shafts and propellers is a significant accomplishment performed during the docking phase of the overhaul and brings us one step closer to moving the ship out of dry dock and back into the water."

An important aspect of this availability includes removing, refurbishing and reinstalling the ship's propulsion shafts and 60,000 pound propellers. Work began shortly after the ship arrived in August 2009 and took about 15 months to complete.

"It's great to witness Team Theodore Roosevelt achieving this important milestone in returning a renewed, refueled and refurbished Theodore Roosevelt to the fleet," said the ship's executive officer, Capt. Douglas Verissimo, U.S. Navy. "Reinstalling the propellers aboard this ship is an exciting feat of engineering, teamwork and skill, and it represents a significant achievement as we work together to get the ship back in the water again where she belongs."

Theodore Roosevelt is undergoing its refueling and complex overhaul. The project is scheduled to last more than three years and will be the ship's one and only refueling and complex overhaul in a 50-year life span. Theodore Roosevelt is the fourth ship of the Nimitz class to undergo this major life-cycle milestone.
