SINGAPORE STRAIT (June 14, 2013) Sailors assigned to USS Freedom's (LCS 1) visit, board, search and seizure (VBSS) team conduct compliant boarding drills. Freedom is underway conducting sea trials in preparation for Cooperation Afloat Training Malaysia, an annual naval exercise series between the United States and nine partner nations in the Southeast Asia region. Fast, agile and mission-focused, littoral combat ships are designed to operate in near-shore environments and employ modular mission packages that can be configured for surface warfare, mine countermeasures, or anti-submarine warfare. Freedom is homeported in San Diego. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Cassandra Thompson)
