Bill, I recently started my challenge coin collection. I figured I'd get my hands on anything that had some sort of connection with my son's Naval service to date. To my knowledge my son is not collecting these at the moment.

The most recent one son Eric was awarded....the CO came out to the flight line while Eric was on the chopper taking a hyd oil sample.....said it was for excellence in maintenance (Eric's a plane captain)

I received the IT coin and really liked it! Just ordered the RTC, Lone Sailor, and Seaman (E-3). I sure hope my son gets into this.....

Was not aware of the popularity of the challenge coins and just found this community. The irony is that I went on the Navy Outfitters site yesterday and saw a myriad of them including the IT coin which I ordered for my son! I plan to give them to him when we visit him in Pensacola (where he is attending IT A school) in August.

Even though appropriated spending funds has been slashed, the command can "raise" funds for these items which can include revenues generated from the commands ship's store, vending machines, etc... Somewhat of a good news ;)
