Thanks Paul!! I thought so, but I wasn't sure. This is his first deployment, so I figured he'd have to go through some sort of "initiation".
EVERYONE gets to do their time in the galley/mess.....called "cranking" and is part of of life at sea..........
My son, Kevin, just sent me a note. He said they moved him off the flight deck (he is an ABMAA) and he now is doing trash in the kitchen. he didn't say why, just that he didn't volenteer for this duty. Could he have gotten into trouble? Is this a demothion?? I sent him a follow up note, but his access to e-mail is pretty sporatic....

SUBIC BAY, Philippines (NNS) -- Sailors and Marines assigned to amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD 4), and amphibious transport dock ship USS New Orleans (LPD 18) arrived in Subic Bay, Philippines, Sept. 16 for a port visit and to begin a major bilateral exercise.
The Boxer Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) along with Marines from the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) will participate in Amphibious Landing Exercise 2014, three weeks of bilateral, air-ground and amphibious training alongside the Philippine Marine Corps.
"This opportunity to train alongside our Republic of the Philippines counterparts is a rarity for Southern California based ARGs and MEUs. I thank our hosts for extending the invitation for us to jointly expand our operational horizons as we share tactics and techniques on ranges and training areas that are new to us," said Capt. Malcolm Potts, commodore of Amphibious Squadron 1.
While in Subic Bay, the crew will participate in community relations projects, experience the local culture and take tours provided by the ship's Morale, Welfare, and Recreation department.
The ARG is currently deployed in the U.S. 7th Fleet Area of Responsibility conducting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts.

USS Boxer (LHD 4), At Sea (NNS) -- The Boxer Amphibious Ready Group (BOXARG) arrived in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility (AOR) Sept. 5.
BOXARG consists of the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD 4), the amphibious transport dock ship USS New Orleans (LPD 18), the amphibious dock landing ship USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49) and the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU).
"We are thrilled to have this opportunity to strengthen relationships with our allies and partners in this dynamic region," said Capt. Malcolm Potts, commodore of Amphibious Squadron One (PHIBRON 1). "We share interests and values with many throughout the vast areas of the Pacific, and we look to build upon our relationships and common understanding of each other's strengths. We look forward to continuing the long and distinguished Navy and Marine Corps history of operating throughout the Pacific and being Ambassadors for the United States."
While in the 7th Fleet, the BOXARG will conduct exercises and port visits to enhance maritime partnerships and promote peace and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
The U.S. 7th Fleet AOR spans 48 million square miles, from the International Date Line to the Western Indian Ocean.
The BOXARG will participate in various exercises and events highlighting the longstanding military partnership and enduring friendship between the United States and its allies.
Boxer left its homeport of San Diego, Aug. 23 for a scheduled deployment to the 7th Fleet and U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. Boxer's last deployment to 7th Fleet was in 2011.
The BOXARG follows in the wake of countless ships, aircraft and Sailors that deployed to the region over the past 100 years, continuing the Navy's ongoing commitment to maintain security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
Very proud Dad of my son who is a DC on the Boxer. My heart has been in my throat since his deploymentlast week. May God bless and watch over all the men and women serving on the Boxer and all branches of the military!
Hello, Boxer families! The N4M annnual Holiday Project is trying to decide on which ship to 'adopt' for the holidays! I am in this group - we send goodie bags to each sailor or marine aboard the chosen ship - it really makes their holiday special. The ship must be on a long deployment, over the holidays and New Years. Since the Boxer is about to ship out, I'd love it if as many of you as possible could go to the N4M Holiday Project' discussion group and vote for the USS Boxer to be chosen!! Here's the link:

Please vote for the USS Boxer! A whole bunch of Moms from the USS Truman (also deployed over the holidays) have voted. We need lots of Boxer votes!!)
Even if the Boxer is not chosen, you might like to join this group - we make lots of sailors very happy!!
