Boxer is “Best in the West” for Navy Chow...
March 28, 2013

By Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class (SW) Brian P. Biller, USS Boxer (LHD 4) Public Affairs

This week the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD 4) was named runner up in the 2013 Navy Captain Edward F. Ney Memorial Award for food service excellence in the Large Afloat category.

“We’re still the best in the West, but second for the overall Navy,” explained Boxer’s food service officer, Chief Warrant Officer Carey A. Worsham, alluding to the East coast ship, USS Wasp (LHD 1) that took first Place.

In Worsham’s eyes, all of the Boxer crewmembers involved in the competition are winners.

The amount of preparation was intense, but all hands involved managed to come together for a common goal.

“Preparing for Ney inspection involves dedication, attention to detail, long hours and hard work for the CS’s and FSA’s,” said Boxers Supply Department Leading Chief Petty Officer, Master Chief Culinary Specialist (SW/AW) Norberto G. Tayag. “We have to make sure that our financial records, training, sanitation, inventory and equipment are all squared away,” he added.

The Food Service division began preparing for the inspection last September, and inspectors visited the ship in December.

“I’m very proud of all the CS’s and FSA’s work that went into preparing for this competition… I am so proud of the food service team and Boxer as a whole,” Worsham added.

Tayag added that being nominated and given a chance to compete for the best of the best in food service operations afloat is an experience that all his Sailors can be proud of, adding that their preparation for next year starts now.

Boxer’s Command Master Chief Todd R. Gruchalla said he could not be prouder of his Sailors for all their hard work and dedication.

“The time and effort that each Culinary Specialist (CS) and Food Service Attendant (FSA) provided to ensure the success of the Food Service Division is commendable,” he said. Gruchalla added that their efforts, along with all Boxer’s Sailors who participated in getting ready for the competition, will have a long-lasting effect on the ship for years to come.

“I am truly appreciative and extremely proud of all Sailors involved in showing the Navy that Boxer is the best ship on the waterfront,” he said.

The Ney awards are named in honor of Captain Edward F. Ney, Supply Corps, U.S. Navy, head of the subsistence division of the Bureau of Supplies and Account from 1940-1945.

My son Greg arrived at Naval Base San Diego on Monday night and is awaiting the return of the Boxer to begin his time in the fleet. He is very excited and has already discovered some of the advantages to being on base in SD. He is anxious to meet his new shipmates and begin his work as MM. He will get to come home this Saturday for his grandfathers funeral. My Dad was Navy retired, WWII and the sailor bond they share will always be there. God speed Skippy we are proud of you

The USS Boxer has a Facebook page, and the Family Readiness Group for the USS Boxer has a Facebook page as well.

I wanted to make a careful reminder to not mention the ship's movement on a public forum such as this.  Please look at the "Operation Security (OPSEC) 2011 Boxer Ombudsman Team" post for more details.  A rule of thumb that I always follow is that if it gets posted by the command on the facebook page, then it is safe to discuss.  :-)  For those that are new, San Diego is a wonderful place.
