Peleliu Awarded Battle "E" for 2012
Story Number: NNS130312-03Release Date: 3/12/2013 11:10:00 AM

By Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Jasmine Sheard, USS Peleliu Public Affairs

USS PELELIU, At Sea (NNS) -- The amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu (LHA 5) received the Battle Efficiency Award, March 8.

Commander, Naval Surface Force Pacific announced via naval message the award of the Calendar Year 2012 Battle "E" and Command Excellence Awards for Pacific Fleet. Peleliu competed with amphibious dock landing ship USS Rushmore (LSD 47) and amphibious transport dock ship USS Green Bay (LPD 20), both part of the Amphibious Ready Group (ARG). Only a single ship per squadron may be nominated for this award.

A ship achieves the Battle "E" for sustained superior performance in an operational environment throughout a 12-month cycle in mission areas of maritime warfare, engineering/survivability; command, control, communications and information warfare, logistics management, and ship safety.

"Winning the Battle 'E' is the culmination of a year's worth of hard work and extraordinary effort by the entire crew," said Capt. John D. Deehr, Peleliu's commanding officer. "There are literally hundreds upon hundreds of individual requirements that must be met during a year in order to be eligible for the award."

Amphibious Squadron 3 department heads evaluated the ships of the group for battle readiness and recommended Peleliu for the award due to the ship's sustained performance.

"Peleliu's performance in a variety of different warfares was really quite superior," said Lt. John Judy, Amphibious Squadron 3 submarine operations officer. "The Battle 'E' isn't just about one particular aspect a ship does. It incorporates several different aspects of engineering, of maritime excellence, of communications, of logistics. It really brings in the whole picture of what Peleliu is doing."

In addition to the Battle "E," Peleliu earned the Black "E" for Maritime Warfare, the Green "E" for Command, Control, Communications and Information Warfare, the Blue "E" for Logistics Management and the Yellow "E" for Ship Safety.

"I'm really proud of USS Peleliu and the crew's outstanding accomplishments in 2012," said Capt. Shawn Lobree, commander, Amphibious Squadron 3. "Hearing the news Peleliu won the 2012 Battle Efficiency award was the best news I've had all year. It's a great honor to earn this distinction. Just to meet all of the wickets and become eligible is a huge challenge in itself. Peleliu earned this recognition after a combination of a year or more of really hard work and outstanding performance across the board."

Peleliu’s divisions shine in the spotlight...

By Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Michael Duran
USS Peleliu Public Affairs

U.S. 5TH FLEET AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY – The amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu (LHA 5) continues “Division in the Spotlight” in a strong push for operational readiness.

DITS is a week long inspection covering a wide scope of divisional operations including, but not limited to, uniform inspections, administration, qualifications, and space preservation.

“A well organized and well managed division is integral to the overall success of Peleliu,” said Capt. John Deehr, commanding officer. “Positive, consistent work ethic and appropriate reinforcement will ensure the highest standards of excellence are maintained on board.”

Each of the 50 separate divisions aboard Peleliu will go through DITS over a course of 30 weeks. Recently, two divisions of the aviation intermediate maintenance department completed their inspections.

“In preparation for DITS, you can find discrepancies that you may have missed,” said Aviation Support Equipment Technician 1st Class Ryan Manglicmot from San Jose, Calif., from AIMD’s Ground Support Equipment division. “Maybe some people are missing training or qualifications; we could get [those discrepancies] fixed prior to inspection.”

DITS is not just used to find areas of potential neglect, but to highlight positive actions and inspire divisional leadership as well.

“It improved the readiness of the division,” added Manglicmot. “Overall we did pretty well, and we learned a lot from the [commanding officer].”

Often considered only an inspection at the division level, DITS incorporates individual evaluations as well. This includes physical fitness, security, medical and training records, and administrative entries.

“Each program is being looked at by itself. That way each person gets their recognition,” said Aviation Electronics Technician 2nd Class John Newman from Boca Raton, Fla., leading petty officer of AIMD’s calibration laboratory. “Yeah, it takes some work to get ready for DITS and make sure it’s good, but once it is, it will be a smooth efficient engine. The people that are running that engine are going to feel great because, ‘Hey, the CO does notice me – hey, I do get looked at.’ And you realize you’ve been a part of the team all along.”

One of many tools the commanding officer uses is DITS to ensure mission accomplishment. With successful compliance, Peleliu has been able to continue a long-standing tradition of operational readiness.

U.S. 5TH FLEET AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY – Amphibious Squadron 3 held a change of command ceremony in the forecastle of amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu (LHA 5), Dec. 20.

Capt. Shawn Lobree assumed duties as commander, Amphibious Squadron 3 from outgoing commodore, Capt. Mark Sakaguchi. Sakaguchi will report next as commander, Afloat Training Group Pacific in San Diego.

The ceremony featured remarks from Sakaguchi, Lobree and Col. Scott Campbell, commanding officer, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

“I always say, ‘train your relief,’” said Sakaguchi. “I have done that, and I could not leave the command in better hands [than Lobree.] I am proud of my staff and I am leaving with confidence that COMPHIBRON Three and the Peleliu Amphibious Ready Group will work well together in the future. This is a solid team under the leadership of Capt. Lobree and Col. Campbell.”

During the past year, Sakaguchi led the Peleliu ARG, comprised of amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu (LHA 5), amphibious transport dock ship USS Green Bay (LPD 20) and amphibious dock landing ship USS Rushmore (LSD 47) through weeks of predeployment workups. The PELARG completed integrated and composite training exercises, ending the summer with a certification exercise that tested the squadron’s mettle and capabilities to conduct amphibious maritime operations leading to the current deployment to the western Pacific Ocean and Middle Eastern region.

“The integration of the blue-green team has been phenomenal,” said Sakaguchi. “My advice to the sailors and Marines aboard is to study, continue to learn and execute boldly.”

Lobree reported to COMPHIBRON Three in May 2011 as the deputy commander. Now as the commander, he shared his thoughts and experiences with the PEL ARG thus far and the skills of the crew.

“I am excited, honored and humbled by the chance to lead Peleliu ARG,” said Lobree. “I have seen the ships go from the deep phases of maintenance, to completing work ups, to now three months into deployment. There is talent everywhere, from the ships’ crews, Marines to my terrific staff.”

Farewell gifts were presented to Sakaguchi during the ceremony by Campbell and Master Chief Machinist’s Mate Victor Servian, COMPHIBRON Three’s senior enlisted advisor, with a “Fair Winds and Following Seas” plaque and an ornamental command pennant adorned with his staff’s signatures and comments.

Following the ceremony, Lobree hosted a farewell reception prior to Sakaguchi’s departure flight.
