I gave my son 2 challenge coins for his PIR: The RTC coin and the Ship 14 U.S.S. Arizona coin(his ship for boot camp). He is an E2 Seaman Apprentice studying to be a Fire Controlman, which I assume…Continue

Cheryl...totally appropriate....RTC Coin or perhaps his Ship....and by all means...start a collection that follows his accomplishments (rate/rating/assignments) as he progresses!

Question ...  My son is PIR Boot Camp end of this month.  Is it inappropriate of me to get him one of these coins for RTC Great Lakes as a keepsake for graduation?  Am thinking this would be a good starter for a potential collection ...  Does it have to be awarded or anything?

I figure anyone can put a groove in a piece of wood- that's why I look for the unusual designs to try to build!

I need a bigger one apparently as my son seems to be hopping all over the place. I'd like to find one of those triangles, or perhaps one that looks like a ship.

I make my own displays since the ones you can buy are all basically the same......

Anyone finding any really unique display cases for your coins?

not exactly re: coins, but think I have some more coin holders to build-----ran across this from Woodcraft: original teak from the deck of the USS North Carolina BB-55.  The North Carolina was the lead ship of the North Carolina class of battleships.....decommissioned in 1947 and now a museum in Wilmington NC.  Here is a link to the sale http://www.woodcraft.com/search2/search.aspx?query=USS+North+Carolina
