OFF TO BOOT CAMP

Posted on March 11, 2009 at 7:52pm 4 Comments

Our son Ray left yesterday to Great Lakes for his boot camp. We are so proud of him and know he will do well. We miss him already, though... We look forward to his Graduation in 9 weeks. I'm glad I found this website it will help me.

Hello Keith: Well it is the fifth week for your son (James) and my son (Tyler). They are on the downhill side. Tyler is in Division 174, Ship #13. Tyler says it is not too tough. But he is counting the days until May First. Good Luck to James and may see you at PIR. We will be the ones with the big smile on our faces. GO NAVY !!

Hello Keith: Thanks for the reply and the information on Boot Camp. It sounds as if the shuttle would be the best. I've heard that it is four blocks from the gate (Porter Gate) to the PIR Hall. Not too bad. I'll bet the SR's are counting the days until PIR. So are we ! Tell your son thanks for his service in the US Navy. See ya.

Spike 's first day was February 25th, so I guess he's starting to get now. His letter had the tone of "why are they doing it this way" He probably thinks he has a better way. No doubt a common attitude. I read that it's not until the 4th or 5th week that they start to understand that there really is a reason for everything.

It has been a couple of weeks then.
My son finished Boot Camp about a year ago. He is currently stationed in Hawaii. He is an Aviation Electricians Mate and enjoys his work for the most part (like working anywhere). He is content where he is. When we had some in the single digits he would text several times a day to see how cold we were. Last night he told his mother that the base swimming pool was closed for the winter?

Best wishes to Ray as he begins his Navy journey. Did you get the first phone call yet?

Welcome to NavyDads Keith! I'm sure you'll find the site as fun and useful as I have. Explore and make some friends, add your comments to a discussion or two, read the postings in the various groups-- even start one or two. I have! If you have any questions or concerns about your sailor and what he is going through...ask! I'm sure someone here will have the answer or can point you in the right direction to find out. I'm lucky enough to have two sailors- my son Eric is on the second half of a seven-month cruise on the carrier Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) and my daughter Kat recently returned from a seven-month cruise on the carrier Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72). And Keith this is a great place to brag about your sailor as well! So join in and let us know how James is doing!

As a parent of a sailor currently or soon to be at Great Lakes you'll have many questions about what your son is going through. Thanks to one of our members we have two excellent videos that you can access from the Video area on the NavyDads.com main page: New Bootcamp 1 of 2 and New Bootcamp 2 of 2. These videos will answer many of your questions and concerns and will give you a better understanding of how the United States Navy transforms our children into sailors!

Be sure to spend some time in the Bootcamp group- there are many questions and answers available to help you understand what your sailor is going through. And as PIR draws closer, be sure to spend some time going through the PIR-Tips, Hints and Helps group- we’ve tried to assemble some tips and suggestions to make your sailor's PIR more enjoyable. Best Regards- Paul
