Ex-Sailor here glad to be aboard and excited about my son deciding to join the NAV. (A Fine Navy Day with another opporutunity in which to Excel!)
My son has a ND contract and is awaiting his Report Date to Great Lakes and is gearing up by keeping in shape. Main concern at this point is Navy Dive Prep School in Great Lakes. If anyone knows of help information, suggestions, tips, or who has a loved one with recent experience with this prior to going on to Panama City, any kind notes would be deeply appreciated. Thanks Much!

@jason,, yes get him set up with a masters trainer is what my son did, besides training with the recruiters navy seals on the side, instead of 50 meters thats require have him go 100,,and work on his run times often, its good to alternate workouts one day, swim one day, run another you know the drill! my son did this for weeks, also see special ops diets, and remember muscle does not float! So pretty much" mean and lean" is what we want! My son loves being a ND, he wouldn't trade it for the world! He's getting so many other trainings under his belt as we speak, he's a very valuable ND :) Pretty much eat, sleep, think ND! As for you get hooked up with all diver associations or clubs to get tips from the retired vets,, I did and they were very helpful in sharing what they know and how to succeed for years ahead. And yes Gary, their such a tight group of brothers thats for sure, even if their spread out nationwide they all still keep in contact, its priceless!
have a great time at PIR. It will be 1yr Sunday that my now ND left for GL.Have him hook up with guys/gals getting ready for Spec Ops PST. My son was in DEP for 7 months training and taking PST every 3-4 weeks to get his Swim/run times down and Reps up. At times he would be in pool 2-3 hours at a time swimming/ treading and the like. after and before was lots and lots of cross training. some days 5-6 hour workouts . He tried to do it 7 days a week. just pure belief in himself and the fact that success was only path. quitting or failure was not in any of his thoughts. Son said all the training helped but the mental belief in himself was most valuable. He graduated with all body types and skill types but every one of his ND buddies were supremely motivated to succeed. Your son will do fine if he goes after it this way.
I am getting ready to go to GL in the morning for my son's PIR. His A School is for HT, but he wants to eventually change rate to ND and combine his welding experience with diving for a civilian career later on in life. His contract is as a Reserve for now. During his required time as a Reserve, he wants to train and get ready. I have some connections with a Pararescue Unit for him to train at, as well as a Masters swimming program for him to swim 5 days per week. Question is, for the guys who are on a ND contract, what is their typical weekly workouts? How many meters/week etc?
prepare now. Hello 2u correct He will be in boot with other Spec Ops; They go down at 10PM up at 3 AM for their EXTRA Pt as Spec OPs. Son said he felt like 2nd grader. He went in as 24yo after few years college and working for a couple on his own. He will get a taste of dive prep during Boot week 3-7 or so 3-4 days AT 3;30AM to 5PM with DIVE Motivators. He will be challenged big time by them his attitude during this time will tell him if he is ready. My son said it was the most positive thing for him in boot. He told me after boot HE WILL BE A NAVY DIVER. because of the dive motivators. DIVE prep really tough both book and pool. quitting is not a option. if the thought is there about quitting then it may be DOR quick.(drop on request). My son qualified on the last day. He said he found what he needed somewhere deep inside to get through the last pool day. His time in panama city was quality. Son said he learned to succeed. meant up at 4AM work out; class; study work out and after dinner and class then he studied. pretty much 7days a week for the first few months in Panama city. Weekends were theirs however the group he was in very focused and success was all they wanted and diving on own and studying was what they did on weekends. 24 from his Boot Division went to dive prep with him he graduated 7 months later in panama city only 6 of the original 24 with him. Some did DOR all in DIVE PREP. some were injured and ROLLED to next class a couple failed but instructors kept them in program rolled them to next class. Commitment is paramount;; quitting is not an option.
Bravo Zulu!!Dive mom here! He will be in Special Ops Div in BC, tough as nails! for 8wks.don;t expect to many phone calls! for Dive prep its about 2 mths, he will be watched inside and outside of base, be careful, oh yah even on the plane at all times. He MUST PASS Dive prep(more tougher) to make it to Panama City FL, loved that place! I would suggest you watch youtube videos on dive prep,in what to expect, its crazy! He must want it inside and out, lots don't make it here,,my son's grp was 80, and only 12 made it,,than it got less at PCity Florida,(100% tougher) only 8 made it, including my son Hooyah! no matter what your son cannot give up, no matter how tough it gets, Don't let him think about other options just DIVE! If this is what he really really wants he'll get it! I remember writing and telling my son, inspirational notes and qtes and lots of prayers his way. and in the end it will all be worth is for him and family,, my son has been on cloud 9 since graduation. (btw we reallly can't expose to much info here due to security and how RDC;s read our comments, fyi) sorry! God Bless!
