Navy Dads

Just received the "I'm a Sailor" call from my son.   In our conversation he mentioned he was given to "Challenge Coins".   Being naive, I was wondering if anyone could explain what these coins are and how they age given out?

Thanks

I had spent the better part of a week burning tons of gigabytes about 18 months ago tracking down the history of the coins as best as I could....pretty much summarized by this in the Goat Locker http://www.goatlocker.org/resources/cpo/history/cpocoin.htm

The story goes back to WWII....Squadron members were each given a "challenge coin". When they went to the bar, each had to present his coin. The one who didn't have it on him was buying the next round for the group....Over the years , they have become a momento for bases, ships, or ratings...A neat collectible that you can pass on to your sailor tracking his/her career...
