Good morning Calvin, thanks very much. I've already been checking out some of the rates and other information plus the videos. I'm former Air Force and have one son in Navy bootcamp and one son in Air Force bootcamp; they entered about a week apart, so I am doing a LOT of letter writing and keeping up! I know about Air Force training (at least, back in the day) but not much about the Navy. This site helps a lot.
My wife graduates Bootcamp June 29th. She gave me some good news in the last letter.
The only job she could get when she enlisted was GSE.
Last week the job classifier asked her what she really wants to do.
She said the medical field - He let her change to dental assistant (HM) - we are both do happy about that!
I'm not military, so the first thing I did was read OPSEC. My son enlisted in 2005 and has done a couple of deployments (Enterprise and Truman). He received the Navy and Marine Achievement Medal with the Truman. He was recently promoted to AT1. This is coming on the heels of his being selected for OCS as a Flight Officer Candidate.
Calvin, thank you for the very thoughtful welcome aboard! I am very impressed by the website and look forward to checking out the very interesting information.
I'm so thankful to have discovered this forum. THANK YOU for all that you do here. I know so little about the military-- my son kind of caught us off guard with his interest in the navy. I have so much to learn here!
Thank you Calvin for the welcome and the advice. I hopefully have corrected my profile to meet OPSEC guidelines especially for SEALS and SEAL recruits. God Bless, Steven W
Thank You . My daughter has been on "The Lincoln" for 2 1/2 years now, And I am Damn Proud of her!! my Dad was a pipefitter on the USS. William M Wood. During the Korean War. He was also a plank owner. I tear up every time I see the Navy commercial on the tv at night.
I can sure tell you that it's sure a lot easier now than when I was in. ' When we deployed our contact with the home front was basically snail mail or on occasion when in port a very expensive overseas phone call that had to be very short because of the cost. Now with internet and satelite phones communication is quite easy. Edward called us several time when deployed to the Gulf using the ships satelite phone. The calls were limited to 15 minutes so everyone could have a turn. He even called us when he was deployed with the Riverene's in Iraq.
I remember when I was stationed in Japan for almost 3 years in the 50's all we had was snail mail.
Our son Edward is a QM1. During his first 14 years in the Navy his was in the MCM community out of Engleside, TX, with 4 deployments to the Gulf. Some of his collateral duties were Counter Terrorism Officer and Small Arms Instrucor He had a 3 year break for some well earned shore duty serving with the Navy Police Force in Roosevelt Roads, PR. For the past 3 years he served in Riverene Squadron 3 out of Yorktown, VA first as an M240 gunner in the Security Force with a tour in Irag and finishing up as a Boat Captain. Now his is in Key West, FL with the Port Security Team. Edward will be retiring in 2014.
I've had quite an experience learning about the new Navy since there have been many changes since I retired in 1978 as an AC1. I had 3 duty stations plus many school assignment in the US during my Navy career. Also served in Japan, Sicily and the Philippines for overseas assignments. My sea duty was aboard 3 carriers.
Thank you for your wealth o information. I an sure I will have questions in the future. I am so happy I have many friends to turn to in this new phase of our life. Thank you very much.
Thanks for the Info! I retired 3 years ago, my wife retired in '06 and her dad did 30 years in the Navy. So we are so proud that the next generation is starting. She has her PIR next Friday. Unfortunately I'm in Afghanistan so I wont see it. I dont suppose the Navy broadcasts the PIR on Skype or anything do they? I know some High Schools stream their graduations. Anyways, my wife and mother-in-law will be there so I will try and time my phone call so I can talk to her after PIR. Anyway, Thanks again for the info!

I think I bragged within OPSEC guidelines.
