Thanks for the help on this.  Sam is our youngest son and the only one in our family to enlist.  We're immensely proud of him but it was tough to see him go.  This site will make the journey that much easier.

...........   folks,      while I can appreciate your 'form letter' type emails and helpful hints/ and navy nomenclature, etc. from admin staff and 'friends' ,  it would have been more pleasant  to note that someone had first read my profile..........   to learn that I was a retired navy veteran with four kids with service experience..... three of which were (are) sailors,  and one in the Air Force.    so,  your welcoming 'letters' really are not 'one size fits all',   and really are quite basic in the info provided or do not apply at all.    but,  thanks for the invite into a unique fraternity of brothers....   and I hope that all your kids enjoy a terrific career path through Navy training, interesting duty, really great travel and beyond.     talk to you again soon.   Ed

Thank you Tim for sending me to the Navy enlisted rates information. At the time I was filling out the info I tried to leave it blank because I didn't know his rate. I have now changed it to S-Pact. I just knew that he was going in as a sailer apprentace. Last year the Sampson battle ship came to Seal Beach and we toured it as a family. At that time  we were asking questions of the sailers and they were saying have a job before going into the Navy. By Ryan taking this route he went in without a specific job, but I understand that he has 6 months to find one.

Ryan had earned his Eagle Scout in the BSA and went in as an E3. Any comment as to how this will affect his path?

My thirty year old son was placed in ship 05 on Oct. 1st., he was stripped of his uniforms and told he was being separated because he had A.D.D. when he was a child. He has not taken any A.D.D. medication for over a couple of years. He is a honest person with integrity, so while suffering from fatigue and sleep deprivation in his second day of basic, he informed the Navy of his medical history at Last Chance. He had informed his recruiter of this prior to his enlistment, the recruiter wouldn't allow him to sign a wavier, instead he ordered my son to not admit that he had A.D.D... I can't believe the Navy doesn't value honesty and integrity.

He asked to sign a wavier and to be re-instated. They refused and told him he would have to be separated then he could sign a wavier and attempt to re-enlist.

They had observed him for four weeks, during which time he successfully passed his academic and physical exams on the first try. They also administered a A.D.D. exam which he passed with minimal A.D.D. indicators. I have contacted my Senator asking him to look into this issue. My son hasn't done anything wrong, he was honest and forthright about his medical history, but It appears the Navy is currently using every excuse to separate trainees. He called me and informed me that they were going to take up to six weeks to out process him and give him an other than honorable separation. His wife, who is an E6 Staff Sergeant in the active duty National Guard, looked up the types of separations, he doesn't have a negative law enforcement or drug record which are the only examples of what would warrant a less than honorable separation.

Now he is discouraged, disappointed, and depressed, he feels he has failed, I told him that he didn't do anything wrong and it's not his fault. The Navy recruiter is the one that has failed my son by not letting  him sign a wavier prior to his enlistment.

Do you have any suggestion on how to protect my son from receiving a negative separation that will have a lasting negative affect on his future employment?

I am a well seasoned Navy Veteran myself, having spent 12 years in the service and many of my peers and subordinates, went on to full retirement, He is my youngest son was born 2 years before I got out He leaves for boot Oct 3.  I had the luxury of being able to sit down with my son and explain many of the things he will face. He choose not me to join and follow my foot steps as to even what I did in he Navy the ACEF Program. I may be able to provide information for those that do not know what to expect. Thanks Tom

thanks for info.  been trying to get info on my sons ship.  he will be serving as an ATI, ATAN on the USS America.  seems to be quite the ship.  He is home for the rest of the week on his first leave, and will be going to "c" school in Lemoore, ca. for a month and then on to san diego for 4 months to get all his sea quals in and do more barracks support. it has been a good time for him so far.  ended up top in his class of 15 and the squadron of 80, all from a kid that didn't want to get a "b" in high school. he missed his test for e4 but the new chief said he would get him into the delayed test.  not much time to study tho.  once again thanks for keeping this site up.

Thanks for the warm welcome!  I'm so proud of my daughter Jessica and I'm traveling to Great Lakes next week to see her graduate from basic training.  The website has been very helpful and I've been able to follow along with my daughter's training schedule the entire time. 

thanks for the welcome Tim. Brianna graduates on 10/11. got a bunch of letters from her already and I'm excited as hell to see my sailor. She holds a really soft spot in my heart and always will, after all shes my little girl. I got to try and hold it together when I see her, even though I know it will be hard as hell.

Tim, thanks for the welcome. Glad to be a part of Navy Dads. My son just deployed last night.

Thanks a bunch for the warm welcome.  We have one daughter that served 4 years and a son-in-law as well.  There is great pride we have in knowing that our children have decided to serve our country and be Navy. 

Thank you all for the warm welcomes.  It's really nice to be part of such a supportive community.  My wife Cindy and I are traveling from Oregon to attend our son Chris' PIR on 30 Aug and it's going to be quite a reunion.  We will be able to share the day with Chris, our daughter is coming up from Indianapolis to be with us, and my division Chief from when I was on active duty is coming to the PIR as well!  I haven't seen him in over 30 years!  It's also my first trip back to Great Lakes since I went through boot camp in 1976.  It's going to be a great Navy day!  We will try to make it to Sarge's meet & greet on the 29th, but for now the best I can do for that is use that good old Navy term TBD!  

Appreciate the warm welcome, Tim. Had to laugh at your profile comment regarding Navy4Moms. Was also there while our son was in Nuke Power School. Couldn't agree with you more. :) The drama was threefold that, however, when I joined a Facebook group (for the 1st time ever) made up of parents whose sons were going through Air Force basic training with my son. Thanks for the immensely valuable and precious time you volunteer to the operation of this superior site!
