Our sailor has decided, with dry dock lasting 'till at least 2016, she has to have a car. Does anyone have experience with helping their sailor buy a car, we were thinking we could do the purchase here and bring it to VA. I assume it would be cheaper here. Can she register the car here? Can we insure it or does she need a separate policy now? She also said, as they live off ship, she can not get regular US mail delivery, is there a simple way around this? She is aboard the Abraham Lincoln.
Any suggestions or information would be greatly appreciated.

She can go through the Navy Federal Credit Union for financing. They are very reasonable. If she is off-ship (an apartment/shared house?) and going to be living that way for a couple of years, she can certainly receive regular mail delivery. She can buy and register/insure right in Va. You don't say where you are from....why would it be any cheaper?
Our son also used Navy Federal Credit Union for his financing and they were a great help - better rate than the dealership or the bank. He was able to set it up for automatic deduction so he doesn't have to worry about a thing. He's in Ballston Spa, NY (we are in CA) and he registered it in NY. Couldn't do it in CA because of our smog laws. He also went with USAA for his auto insurance - they gave him the best rate and also do his renters insurance.
My son also used NFCU to purchase his vehicle and he's stationed in Naval Base San Diego. However, the challenge may lie in selecting the proper auto insurance carrier... Looks like B'sNukemom may have the answer to the insurance bit..
Sorry, we are in mid-michigan and it seems, when buying anything used it is slightly cheaper in a medium sized market. As opposed to the Norfolk, Richmond area. I am starting to check on prices of cars now, to see if comparable cars are really cheaper here. If she was buying new it would not matter where she bought, but used is another story.
She is going through the Navy credit union, I am glad for the info on USAA, I will check them out. I do not know what barriers there would be to registering the car here, not smog certificates, she does not have a residence yet, so i was thinking she could register it back home if she wished to. Not sure what the differences in taxes would be between there and here, something else to find out I guess.
USAA was the best for insurance for our son - I have also heard that Geico offers pretty good rates too. We live in Riverside, CA and we have Wawanesa Insurance for hubby & I (& college son) - auto/homeowners. They are really good insurance (we've been with them almost 30 years) but are only on the West Coast (they are located in San Diego). Our son is in NY now so he couldn't stay with them...
I know that USAA is very military friendly!
