My son has been in Pensacola since 2/8. he is waiting to class up for AO as well.  Hasn't talked about any "trouble" but I can tell his is bored from the number of text messages I get.  He did say some of the barracks were not as strick as his.  He started working out with the AO instructors (as I understand it) three times a week and has signed up for some 5K runs coming up.

A delayed response to Greg Delany:

Thanks for your counsel, Greg! The day after I posted my query, my son Chris called to tell me he would receive his list of orders from which to choose on Friday the 18th, and he would get to choose the following Wednesday the 23.  Weirdly psychic!

I saw the comment by Dan about concerns about his daughter waiting on her A-school to start, as a retired AE who went through the same waiting period I'd like to put his mind at ease.  When recruits get to A-school there are usually several pre schools they might have to go through, there's AFUNP which is aviation fundimentals, they may also have BE&E which is basic electronics and electricity, the Navy schedules specific times for these schools and have to wait for students too finish before they start new A-school classes, this process can take as long as two weeks to two months depending on the sailors so the fact that Dans daughter has'nt started school yet shouldnt be a concern.  As far as having lots of time on there hands just remember that these young adults have made a decision to join an organization that tends to keep a pretty close eye on its people, I'm not saying they don't go out and have fun but they take good care of each other and for the most part don't go out looking for trouble. I hope Dan will feel better after reading my note, and not feel that his sailor has been forgotten.

Hi Dads.

My daughter graduated Boot Camp on January 9th and left for AO school in Pensacola the very next day. She been there almost 2 months and hasn't been "classed up" yet. She has no idea when her schools starts and when she can come home on leave.

I can't believe the Navy allows this. Pensacloa is party central for these kids. They have nothing to do but sit around and get in to trouble. My daughter says there is little to no dicipline there and many of the kids get in to a lot of trouble. (I'm not talking MY daughter ofcourse....she's a good christian girl) :)

Think about it. A bunch of 18 and 19 year olds on thier own for the first time in thier lives. Nothing to do, money in the bank. It's a recipe for disaster.  I was Air Force back in the late 80's and remember school being much diffferent. We started classes on day 1. Marched to class, marched to chow, had a strict curfew. There was some free time towards the end but we earned it. The Navy just throws these kids together, makes them wait, and hopes for the best. I think it's crazy!

Ray,

Each command is different. You should see if there are any FB pages for his rate. In our sons Corpsman A-school they got orders at 6 to 7 weeks into a 14 week school.

My son graduates from A School on March 18.  Usually, how long before that do the sailors find out their deployments?

HM school is 12 weeks and then 2 weeks of clinicals before grad day, Good luck to both your sailors.

My son just graduated from basic training last week, and he was a grad n go to San Antonio for MA A School.  The greatest thing is the restoration of his presence on Facebook!  I've joined to keep track of the A School process, and share thoughts with other dads, granddads, and other family members.
