Hey All-
New to this group, but been here awhile. Here's my query-My Son is in A school in Pensacola as an IT. Anybody hear where the Navy is sending the latest IT grads? My son said something about possibly Germany but it's just talk. Anyone else have a recent IT grad, and to where did they get deployed? The curiousity is killing this cat....

Hey Kevin
What we found that a US phone does have a difficult time as there are no agreements with carriers for service, But there is a agreement for a UK service provider, Yes strange but thats how it goes we also talk with our family in AZ on Skype.

So sad, but major areas like San Diego are dangerous for everyone, not just the Navy personnel. I lived (through) in California for many years, primarily in the Palm Springs area, and would get a major headache if I had to drive into the Los Angeles/Orange County/San Diego areas. I like the Chicago area (between the Great Lakes base and downtown) just about the same, except there seemed to be more lanes and more off-ramps one-after-the-other in Illinois. LOL! It is still a shame, but we can only caution them, not control the pedal-to-the-metal attitudes, unfortunately. Our daughter's Chief was riding in a car (passenger) recently which got nailed by someone running a red light. He's got a broken pelvis and is currently in a wheel chair, and it is unknown if he'll be able to deploy with his ship next month.

That is such sad news. My prayers go out to the families of the sailors. SPEED KILLS!

I posted a note about this in the Prayer Requests group, but I wanted to share some very sad news about the loss of two Sailors who were stationed in Point Loma (San Diego) with my son at the ASW base.

The article about this tragic accident is posted below. Please remind your Sailor(s) that automobile and motorcycle accidents are the leading cause of death in the Navy. While your sons and daughters may not be deployed in the fleet yet, they need to be mindful of their own safety as well as the safety of their shipmates.

RIP Brian Davis and Seth Hartin.

The roaming charges are nuts, Sean used his I phone to keep in touch as he was flying to Bahrain and then used it off and on for the first couple of weeks over there to check his email etc his bill was $500. So what he did was bought a pre paid cell phone to make calls home.

Good to know about Verizon/Skype. Someone at Verizon told my wife Skype and the Verizon on our daughter's cell phone would only work within the US with her account. How does one sign in with Verizon Internet service when they're somewhere like Japan? I figured a different Internet Service Provider (ISP) might be available at different locations, but not Verizon. Oh, well, she's going to have a Netbook with her, where I've installed Skype so that's got a cam/speakers and should be sufficient and also avoid cell phone roaming charges. LOL!
