My son Skypes from Bahrain all the time as long as he has a connection. The wifi connections are somewhat tricky and requires permission from someone on base before they can use it in the barraks. He has been out on Deployment up the Gulf for the last couple of weeks and has been able to receive and send emails via Facebook said that they don't have wifi while underway but when in port they can access facebook on the ship using either their own computers or the ships computer.

Check the availability of Skype on your systems before you count on it. We found out even with the Internet/Data access on Verizon, Skype won't work outside the U.S. And we've learned aboard ship (where our daughter is deploying) they can have their computers, DVD players, cells, etc., but there is no access (Internet) for them except on the ship's designated computers. There is also designated phone access.

Great lakes has crap reception in the best of places, and you phone roams almost constantily when youre there.... I take to shutting my phone off because it eats my battery...
My daughter also uses Verizon so we can all talk free... We are going to put Skype on our computers so we can talk and text for free no matter what country she is in ....

On Monday, June 7, our girl used a borrowed cell phone (non-Verizon) to call me to check with Verizon to see if there were problems. She could not send or receive, and several other people in A School were also experiencing the same issues with their Verizon accounts. I contacted tech support, they found nothing for that area of Illinois, though they also had problems with no service available in Ohio and Indiana (weather, I believe). On Verizon, you can supposedly contact Tech Support via 611 (no cost on minutes, etc.), but that didn't work nor did the *228 to reprogram the phone. She couldn't get out at all.

It turned out there was a disconnection in their service to both those support numbers, but a nice lady support person said to have her use a different service (must have been Army or Air Force - hehehehe) cell or a pay phone to call 1-800-922-0204 (Verizon Tech Support) and they would try to get "to" the customer phone instead of the customer trying to reach them. We've now filed that number away for future reference, because Verizon was able to find their issue, reprogram our daughter's phone and get the problem straightened out for all their customers.

It looks like both parties in the accident were drunk; the driver and the Sailor who was run over. Too sad.

My son graduated A School yesterday and has his first week off. He got the rating he wants, but is Reserve, and wants to go Active. No one seems to know how he can do this. He's starting C School in a week, in a specialty that is usually not for reservists, and it seems a shame to waste all this time waiting tables while waiting to be called up. Can anyone help with changing from Reserve to Active?

Unfortunately the floods have affected orders from 'A' School to 'C' schools for the time being.

Clay- I'm going to have to keep my eye out for your daughter so that I might remind her "dads always know" =)
