My son, Cody left for A school at Fort Sam yesterday
Yep, cannot combine leave and liberty.
Although once they're in the fleet, some commands make remote check out/check in possible if the sailor is in the local area, so take anyone saying "Yes, you can" with a grain of salt. They may have had special circumstances. It simply will not happen in A school where they are strict.
You can figure out how many leave days your sailor has earned by counting 2.5 days per month since they shipped to boot camp. Most A school sailors won't have taken any leave yet. They earn five days in boot camp, and can borrow a week or two forward. If their school is long, they will have plenty of time to earn back enough leave to take a week after A school. If their school is short, they must decide which leave period would be most desirable. Most choose the holidays.
Most school commands allow them to take up to two weeks. I have heard that Groton does not, and makes them choose one or the other. I would love verification on the one week thing.
At Great Lakes, they actually close down some of the barracks because they are so empty, and move those who stay behind into another building temporarily. This saves money, and reduces the amount of watches required. The staff wants time off too! They strongly encourage them to go home. It is the one time they KNOW they can have Christmas at home.
The dates are not announced until much closer to the holiday, and I've guessed wrong more than once. Never buy their plane tickets on a guess. With Christmas on a Sunday this year, I'm not sure at all.
My son was told that he should have enough leave by the time Christmas comes around but I really dont think he cares because I told him that he will probably have to eat there for Thanksgiving and he said he would be fine as long as his PS4 gets there. He states that he has been keeping busy by playing basketball but he is mostly concerned about sleeping, and of course his PS4 that is on its way to him.
:/
I am seeing that there are many factors that could determine leave. I hope they come home for Christmas. I am sure it won't happen much. But apparently sailors have the idea that down time is not "fun". But they all have duty and some of those are better or worse. However, taking a trip to Pensacola for Aircrew graduation I was thinking they went from GL to Club-Med Pensacola so there could be worse places and he will be happy when he phases up to the higher level. To keep my sanity I remind myself, and him if necessary, that he signed up for the Navy, get used to it. I would probably ask for the time off and then if he doesn't come home, go to work to keep busy. Chances are though if he comes home he won't be sitting around much whether you are home or not.
Thank You Dave and Paul,
My son had told me that they had advised him to take advantage and visit his family when he does have a chance like Christmas, hopefully everything works out. Hopefully he does, but if not we understand. Like Dale said we cant really depend on Navy rumor, I just hope I can get the time off from work so he doesn't just sit here alone like he did at Pensacola.
Thanks
Typically the schools shut down over the holiday, but please remember these are military installations and someone may need to stand watch during those times.....and as in the case of most of the world, RHIP (rank has it's privileges)
