Date Deployed: May 3, 1975 (USS Nimitz).
Unit Cost: About $4.5 billion each.
Propulsion: Two nuclear reactors, four shafts.
Length: 1,092 feet (332.85 meters).
Beam: 134 feet (40.84 meters); Flight Deck Width: 252 feet (76.8 meters).
Displacement: Approximately 97,000 tons (87,996.9 metric tons) full load.
Speed: 30+ knots (34.5+ miles per hour).
Crew: Ship's Company: 3,200 - Air Wing: 2,480.

USS JOHN F KENNEDY (CVN 79) Construction begins in 2012
Carriers of the Ford class will incorporate fourteen new design features including:
Advanced arresting gear.
Automation, which reduces crew requirements by several hundred from the Nimitz class carrier.
The updated RIM-162 Evolved Sea Sparrow missile system.
AN/SPY-3 dual-band radar (DBR), as developed for Zumwalt class destroyers.
An Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) in place of traditional steam catapults for launching aircraft.
A new nuclear reactor design (the A1B reactor) for greater power generation.
Stealthier features to help reduce radar profile.
The ability to launch the F-35C Lightning II.

It's a shame they've changed the direction of the camera and we can't see the ship currently. I'm presuming the direction/angle may change during the day, and hope they get back to a view with the ship. Watching the sun come up on the Enterprise was captivating, then watching the liberty boats pull up to the fantail and heading back to shore - updated one minute at a team. It was mesmerizing.

I agree Kerry. I was fortunate enough to join my son on the USS Reagan last year from Honolulu to San Diego. By the time we got into port I was feeling so patriotic I wanted to tell the world what a great job our Sailors and ALL military personnel do in protecting this great country of ours!

Tom, I was very fortunate to be able to go on Tiger Cruise when Enterprise came home last July. What an absolutely amazing and unforgettable experience, and to be able to spend a few days at sea with these great American heroes was priceless. For those that haven't been, do whatever you can to go should you get the chance. You won't regret it, I promise.

Welcome all of you Enterprise folks! One of my twin sons serves aboard the USS Ronald Reagan, CVN-76. His ship is presently in maintenance for awhile. Carrier life is truly amazing as you will see if you are lucky enough to go on a Tiger Cruise!

My daughter is aboard the Enterprise also. This is her first deployment. She is looking forward to cranking being over so she can go back to being an O.S. I join you all in your well wishes to our Sailors.

Our son is also aboard the USS Enterprise. He is mass communications. I'm glad to know some of the other families of these Sailors; we can keep each other informed.
