All of you gentleman are fortunate that your daughters are already there... mine is counting down the days until June 20, 2012... Ship out day from MEPS on her way to Great Lakes for BC... Am happy to have found another group to join to get additional info on the 'process' of my daughter becoming a sailor and sharing information with those who have been there and can give some guidance to a 'newbie' in the process.

PS -- right now she's somewhere in the Pacific and we'll have an e-mail exchange soon.  The CARE package might get there by February.

If she's like my daughter -- because she decided to.

When my daughter decided to enlist she said "Dad I'm enlisting in the Navy" 

She didn't ask me, she told me.

A good decision on her part as I've learned.

Somehow, sometime, she got real grown up and mature.

It happened -- I didn't make her do it - didn't ask her to do it -- she just did it.

And I'm real glad she did it -- enlisted that is.

Independent reliable trustworthy responsible daughter-- what could any dad ask for?

Greetings everyone. In the way of introduction, my daughter's best friend is currently in Boot Camp and my daughter (technically step-daughter but I really don't think of her that way) reports to Basic in January.

WOW! How did she ever get so grown up and mature thinking???

Bonnie graduated on 10/21. We went to PIR and I was very proud to be there. Watching the graduation was a lot different than when I was graduating (1974). I got to appreciate the tradition and history a lot more. With all the crap you see on TV going on within our government, two unpopular wars and the economy, it is so impressive how many of our young people step up to serve.

Bonnie is off to A school now on her way to being a dental assistant. Seeing the change and growth in her from those short 8 weeks in boot was amazing. She was always an amazing daughter to me anyway. Now, she's an amazing adult - and sailor.

Cell phone and charger -- yup -- that works most places she'll be.

Not when deployed -- then only email, postal mail, or nothing.

Laptop and Skype -- good if it works where she is.

Skype worked for a friend in Afghanistan (civilian civil engineer volunteer) with a satellite phone.

At many bases, probably yes,  Out in the Pacific - above or below water - not likely.

About gaining weight at BC and after -- don't know -- depends on where she started from.

My daughter lost some weight thru boot camp and after. Before MEPS and BC did her 1.5 mile runs here in Minnesota in winter to get ready for BC PT.

Complained that on her ship (Abe) too hard to get to mess on time because of weird work schedule "5 and dime". 

But now after her first deploy and ready for the next, she's in so good shape from running up and down ladders who cares her weight.

she just needs more sleep -- last time saw her had dark circles eyes until she caught up on sleep.

Now she's readying for another deploy.

Bless them all our daughters - what they do they just do it.

I will second the thought on gaining weight during BC.  Our daughter did also.  She had lost over 60 lbs before she left for BC and was quite upset that she gained about 10 lbs during BC mainly because they "didn't have anything healthy" to eat and the fact that they were on hold for about 2-1/2 weeks when they first got there and were not allowed to PT.  When she was in Pensacola for A school, internet access was horrible and Skype was not possible.  She is now in San Diego and graduated from C school two weeks ago and is paying for internet access in her room, Skype works great!  We were there over Labor Day and had to print out boarding passes before heading home and as she doesn't have a printer, we had to go to liberty area to use a printer and the internet was not useable if there is someone gaming (which is almost always).  We ended up finding a local Real Estate office on Coronado and the kind gentleman who was working there was more that happy to help us!  Also, a little information on cell phone reception.  It seems that most of the bases have spotty cell phone reception and we have been told it has to do with the electronics on the ships!  So much so that when you pickup a rental car at the San Diego airport they will warn you that the ships will also interfere with the remotes for the cars at times!

Skype is great (see elsewhere on this site for information about it) and we've been able to use it a few times when our daughter was deployed.  Rather strange to be talking with her, but not being allowed to know where they are except that they're in port somewhere that we have a U.S. Navy base.  LOL! 

Don't count on her losing weight. Our daughter actually gained some because they're exercising and - the main ingredient - eating properly, along with actually sleeping soundly without waking up to text messages. The main thing our daughter wanted was personal items so she didn't have to wear Navy issue anymore.

I figure I'll just take her cell phone and charger. She can let us know about internet availability when she gets to San Antonio and we can ship her laptop later. We were hoping to use Skype but, we have "facetime" on the iphones so we can still see her when we call anyway.

As far as clothes, she'll have to let us know. Honestly, we would not know what to send anyway without her specifically asking for something. I'm sure she's lost weight. Besides if we just picked out clothes for her, chances are they wouldn't be the ones she wants.
