Our daughter had A School at Great Lakes, and had requested her laptop, cell phone and a limited amount of specific civilian clothes. The problem with the laptop is there is generally no Internet provided, unless she were to be on a Navy facility where they may have a Navy Exchange/community area with wireless. Otherwise, the only way is to have a "card" with an Internet account but then you're in the $60 per month range of expense with no guarantee on the reception at the "next" base. Our daughter also wanted DVD movies to watch, knowing in advance her Internet access would need to be on her smart phone only. Remember, when taking clothes, they're not in regular clothes much, and still have very limited storage areas. They also must be able to carry everything as they move around (shifting berthing areas, etc.). It can become complicated because they must have their right arm clear to salute. LOL!
Hey guys, can any of you tell me what a recruit is allowed to take to "A" school when they leave Great Lakes? I understand we'd have to meet her at the airport the day after PIR to give her whatever she is allowed to take with her.
I know I'm taking her cell phone and charger. Laptop?
The recruiter said she won't be allowed to leave the base during the first ? number of "phases" of school and won't need civvies. Not sure how long a phase lasts and if I should take her a change or two of clothes.
Hopefully, she'll let me know in a letter. Any thoughts?
Just got plane tickets to go and be with my Daughter and her family for Thanksgiving. She has been serving for three years. But during my last day there she'll be on duty. and won't be able to see me off :-( . Her ship is in the yards and I won't be able to go aboard :-( . But as a Navy Veteran, I do understand and I'm very Proud that she is willing to sacrifice somethings to serve and protect our country.
Oh man, happy for you. It's been 3 years since my daughter PIR -- the memories of the boot camp time still very vivid. First letter home had me totally --totally don't know how to say it -- she's doing it on her own -- bless her.
The waiting for a letter or phone call doesn't end at boot camp.
On deployment -- email works unless it doesn't -- no phone -- US mail slow.
But you and your daughter will, or already have done, learned to make the most of limited communication.
Here's a summary of my most recent communications with my daughter --
"NAVY announced your ship departed --" "Yeah dad we under way -- me qualified ):' "Congrats" "):"
Wow!! what a day for me, good thing do happen in bundles. well our daughter got to make her first call home, she is doing well, we are so happy to hear her voice. I hope that other parents had the opportunity to talk to their recruit today and if not maybe soon. God bless every recruit.
I was in the Navy and went through Great Lakes. Unless you got hospitalized or "asmo'd", everything progressed on schedule. She is still on schedule to PIR on 10/21, nothing is on hold. I was just trying to understand how they number the training weeks now. I probably used to know it but, boot camp for me was a long time ago.
LOL! One of the phrases to get used to is "on hold." It applies to boot camp and the schools. Our daughter had PIR more than a year ago now, was at Great Lakes for A School, and then was on hold for more than two weeks before school started. And was moved twice in the meantime, too. LOL! One of the people she was in A School with was thrown off her schedule, her ship departed and she had to be sent to Guam or somewhere to meet the ship eventually.
Can anyone explain how the Navy counts the training weeks? My daughter left for RTC on 8/24. She wrote a letter on 9/14 saying it was her 2-1 day. Supposedly that means week 2, day 1.
If you don't count processing week, wouldn't the first week have started on 8/31 and the second week on 9/7?
Her PIR date is still October 21. It's probably trivial but, I would like to understand it.
Hi Pete, I/m sure they will make it and pass the entire boot camp with out a problem, they just need to work a bit harder and focus on what they are doing. Yes Amanda is in RTC at this moment and her Div. is 950 she tells me that her Div. is rather large. Well, good luck to Bonnie, we pray every night for Amanda and all recruits. Best wishes. Oscar
Bonnie did her crunches and pushups but, didn't finish the 1.5 mile in time. She is stressing out because they made her medical yeoman and it's taking up all of her free time and study time. But, she said she's passing all of her written tests. She said she got light duty on 9/16 because she has about 6 blisters on each foot. She's doing a lot of extra running from building to building delivering and picking up medical paperwork then having to go right to PT. So, she should pass the next PT with no problem.
Oscar is your daughter at RTC right now? What division? Bonnie is in 351.
