Our daughter during boot camp got about 20 minutes per night (their unit was doing well) to write, plus sometimes had a "free day" on Sundays.  They usually got to mail things at the base post office once a week, although some divisions had that revoked because they weren't following instructions.

 

And, when they're deployed (their is a lot more information around somewhere here) cell phones can be mighty expensive from foreign countries.  Ships usually have phones available, but depending on what they're doing, their duty times, etc., email is usually the best method.  I didn't get a call on Father's Day this year, because the ship was running around doing things which required radio silence.

The kids in boot camp have no free time at all --maybe 2 hours Sunday mornings. At least for the first few weeks.

Later, a bit more, if they are keeping up with their training.

I only much later learned that some of my daughter's letters were written in her rack --  unauthorized time -- that's why her penmanship was so bad.  She was caught by the RDC -- had to wait a few weeks for the next letter.

So when you get a letter from your kid -- they had to fit it in with a very demanding schedule.

Later, when deployed -- it's on again off again -- no cell towers in the far Pacific.  Mail takes weeks. Email mostly works but can be cut off any time.

Best chance to talk to your daughters is at PIR -- worth going to anyway -- and then when they are in their A-school when they may have a cell phone off-base.

 

As for phone calls  -- they get a chance to do it sometimes at boot camp, but it could be any time of day.

Typically it is in week 3 that you'll get that letter....and MAYBE a call depending on the RDCs and how well they have performed as a division...

My daughter Bonnie went to RTC on 8/24. So, she's nearing the end of her second week. No letter yet but, I have made contact with four other people with recruits in Bonnie's division and they have not received letters yet, either. I went through boot and I know how crazy busy and confusing things are the first few weeks, so I'm being patient. Everyone says, "no news is good news". Still, it will be an enormous relief to get that first letter.

Hello all, yesterday we got our first letter from our daughter, here are some of her comments, we got in trouble and we had to hold a book in front of us, I pray everyday, things are not so bad YET!!, they feed us very well, cookies after every meal, so don't expect me to loose weight, RTC's are not so mean, we learn how to fold and stow my uniforms. this are just a few of her comments, she is doing well and enjoying it so far, its her first week after the week of processing, she and her division of 116 will come out strong.

My Sailor, Alexandra, finally had a short 5-day deployment after her ship, which just camp out of the Maintenance yard since her assignment in late May.

 

She was not a happy sailor having to live on ship in Newport, and doing a number of duties other than her classification. She was staring to question her choice (at age 19 who doesn't?)

 

She just returned and was in a really positive mood, really enjoying the officers she works directly with and has less than a month with a Petty Officer who is the type who makes life miserable for all around him. Luckily, the replacement is already on board, and she thinks she'll really be able to learn her craft.

 

Will be out for short tours later this year, before I can get down for some extended dad time at Thanksgiving.
