My son is about to deploy on a DDG and I'm curious what life will be like.  Do they spend all their time at sea, do they get to visit foreign ports, do they get liberty? just a few of the questions I have about life under deployment.

My daughter deployed on a DDG three years ago. It was assigned to the Persian Gulf. On the way over, they stopped in Hawaii, Bangladesh and Singapore. When they got to the Persian Gulf, they stopped in Dubai and Qatar. So yes, they visited foreign ports and she was able to leave the ship. i'm sure that wherever your son's ship is deployed, they will stop in nearby ports. What sort of liberty they get will probably depend on the ship's schedule and the security level in place.

One thing you should know is that on the way back from deployment, family members are often allowed to ride the ship for the last week or so back to its home port. These are called Tiger Cruises. If you have a chance to go, DON'T miss out. I rode my daughter's ship back from Pearl Harbor to San Diego, and it was one of the greatest weeks of my life.

Thanks Robert, I'll have to check out that Tiger Cruise.
