"Greyhounds of the Sea"

Navy Destroyer:

The destroyer evolved from the need of navies to counter a new ship which made a devastating debut in the Chilean Civil War of 1891 and in the Sino-Japanese War of 1894. This was the swift, small torpedo boat that could dash in close to the larger ships, loose their torpedoes and dash away. The world's navies recognized the need for a counter weapon and so the torpedo boat destroyer — later just "destroyer" — was born. From the first U.S. destroyer commissioned in 1902 to the famous ships of World War II to the Spruance-class to the Arleigh Burke-class, the U.S. Navy's destroyers have been evolving. And that evolution continues into the 21st century with the coming of the DD(X).

Description:

These fast warships provide multi-mission offensive and defensive capabilities, and can operate independently or as part of carrier battle groups, surface action groups, amphibious ready groups, and underway replenishment groups.

Background:

Technological advances have improved the capability of modern destroyers culminating in the Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) class replacing the older Charles F. Adams and Farragut-class guided missile destroyers. Named for the Navy's most famous destroyer squadron combat commander and three-time Chief of Naval Operations, the USS ARLEIGH BURKE was commissioned July 4, 1991, and was the most powerful surface combatant ever put to sea. Like the larger Ticonderoga-class cruisers, DDG 51's combat capability centers around the Aegis Weapon System (AWS). AWS is composed of the SPY-1D multi-function phased array radar, advanced AAW and ASW systems, VLS, and the Tomahawk Weapon System. These advances allow the Arleigh Burke-class to continue the revolution at sea.

Yippee!  Good deal, Paige!  We're awaiting word (March 1) whether we're on the Tiger Cruise several weeks out for our daughter coming back from deployment.  Save a berth for her ship, though it is a couple months (which we can now count in weeks) before she's back in port.

Welcome to all of the new members of our Destroyer Group.  At the end of the week I'm headed to San Diego to attend a Family Day Cruise with my son on the destroyer USS Howard.  I'm really looking forward to it!

Hope your sailors are all doing well.

Welcome to the group, folks!  We're rather quiet here.  Once on deployment, we don't talk about what our Sailors or their ships are doing.

I served on the USS John Young DD-973 from 1985-1989 and the USS Fitzgerald DDG-62 from 1997-2000.  Destroyers are very near and dear to my heart.

Welcome, Stephen! If you've got any questions, we'll try to answer them. Remember OPSEC here. That's operations security, and we need to keep quiet on any specifics we might know. We know our daughter is aboard the USS Decatur (DDG-73), but where she is and what she's doing is none of our business so we don't ask. We do get emails pretty frequently because they have onboard computers for use, and occasionally get to Skype when they're in some base which has Internet available to the troops and she can use her Netbook computer which has a built-in webcam and microphone. And we get occasional shipboard phone calls, too.

Here you go, David: http://www.navydads.com/group/skypeinformation/forum/topics/things-... The only time you can use Skype is when they're in a port somewhere which has Internet available (usually a NEX or recreational facility). Both parties have to have it installed, and for the video to work you each need at least a microphone built-in or installed on each computer, and if you want to see each other a video camera built-in or connected to each computer is also required.
