"Greyhounds of the Sea"

Navy Destroyer:

The destroyer evolved from the need of navies to counter a new ship which made a devastating debut in the Chilean Civil War of 1891 and in the Sino-Japanese War of 1894. This was the swift, small torpedo boat that could dash in close to the larger ships, loose their torpedoes and dash away. The world's navies recognized the need for a counter weapon and so the torpedo boat destroyer — later just "destroyer" — was born. From the first U.S. destroyer commissioned in 1902 to the famous ships of World War II to the Spruance-class to the Arleigh Burke-class, the U.S. Navy's destroyers have been evolving. And that evolution continues into the 21st century with the coming of the DD(X).

Description:

These fast warships provide multi-mission offensive and defensive capabilities, and can operate independently or as part of carrier battle groups, surface action groups, amphibious ready groups, and underway replenishment groups.

Background:

Technological advances have improved the capability of modern destroyers culminating in the Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) class replacing the older Charles F. Adams and Farragut-class guided missile destroyers. Named for the Navy's most famous destroyer squadron combat commander and three-time Chief of Naval Operations, the USS ARLEIGH BURKE was commissioned July 4, 1991, and was the most powerful surface combatant ever put to sea. Like the larger Ticonderoga-class cruisers, DDG 51's combat capability centers around the Aegis Weapon System (AWS). AWS is composed of the SPY-1D multi-function phased array radar, advanced AAW and ASW systems, VLS, and the Tomahawk Weapon System. These advances allow the Arleigh Burke-class to continue the revolution at sea.

I've heard jerky is an attraction-getter, especially in closed environments where the smell spreads quickly. LOL! The Navy For Moms website has some great ideas for packing items and things to send, also. I'm on the road right now, so don't have a chance to get the link, but if folks would nose around there you'll find it quite easily.

Chris, thank you for your comments and the information shared about sending care packages. It means alot to our sailors and soldiers serving overseas to receive care packages from home. I've sent many CP's to my son and other sailors and soldiers. There's no better feeling than the gift of giving to others. Homemade jerky is among the favorites of the items I send.

Special thanks to Paige, whose Son's destroyer Howard shared the same dock in San Diego with our daughter's Decatur, which has now deployed. As we're adjusting to time zone differences and still coming to grips with GMT and + plus - time zones are added together LOL! and, no, they don't know the football/baseball game results just because they're in the "future." We're about to make a "scheduled" Skype connection this weekend. Fortunately, we're going to be at our two other daughters' college for Parents Weekend so we hopefully will have a family reunion over the Internet.

I'd like to remind Destroyer parents to work with your Ombudsman assigned to each ship. Our daughter's ship actually has a public Facebook page where they occasionally post authorized photographs of activities. That's pretty cool.

The other thing if your child is deployed, start thinking Thanksgiving and holiday packages NOW. It may take 30-45 days for a parcel to reach them, and it never is too early to prepare. The US Postal Service has information on Care Package Kits (Free, and reduced mailing fees) on their Supporting Our Troops site, and the Navy For Moms website also has this information. Keep in mind some of the information and pricing may be up to four years old, but the costs to APO/FPO addresses are still reduced for our service men and women.

Hans, thanks for sharing your analysis on seasickness. I am so looking forward to when the Howard has their next family day cruise, but I must admit, I'm alittle concerned about how my body will handle it, lol.

ROFLOL! That's good, Hans, thanks. I found this San Diego ABC TV station report of the deployment: http://www.10news.com/news/25096399/detail.html

There are three stages of seasickness.

Day 1 - You're afraid you're going to die.
Day 2 - You know that you're going to die.
Day 3 - You're afraid that you're not going to die.

Day 4 - Well, that's over.
