"Greyhounds of the Sea"

Navy Destroyer:

The destroyer evolved from the need of navies to counter a new ship which made a devastating debut in the Chilean Civil War of 1891 and in the Sino-Japanese War of 1894. This was the swift, small torpedo boat that could dash in close to the larger ships, loose their torpedoes and dash away. The world's navies recognized the need for a counter weapon and so the torpedo boat destroyer — later just "destroyer" — was born. From the first U.S. destroyer commissioned in 1902 to the famous ships of World War II to the Spruance-class to the Arleigh Burke-class, the U.S. Navy's destroyers have been evolving. And that evolution continues into the 21st century with the coming of the DD(X).

Description:

These fast warships provide multi-mission offensive and defensive capabilities, and can operate independently or as part of carrier battle groups, surface action groups, amphibious ready groups, and underway replenishment groups.

Background:

Technological advances have improved the capability of modern destroyers culminating in the Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) class replacing the older Charles F. Adams and Farragut-class guided missile destroyers. Named for the Navy's most famous destroyer squadron combat commander and three-time Chief of Naval Operations, the USS ARLEIGH BURKE was commissioned July 4, 1991, and was the most powerful surface combatant ever put to sea. Like the larger Ticonderoga-class cruisers, DDG 51's combat capability centers around the Aegis Weapon System (AWS). AWS is composed of the SPY-1D multi-function phased array radar, advanced AAW and ASW systems, VLS, and the Tomahawk Weapon System. These advances allow the Arleigh Burke-class to continue the revolution at sea.

My daughter is not now, and I don't think she ever will be on a distroyer. I however was on the USS Bigelow DD942. It is long gone now, but I rembember some of the times very well others are a bit foggy. After all it was 30 years ago now that I left the Navy. I look forward to reading your sailors adventures.

Thank you, Paige for your thoughts and comments. Any part that any crew member played in the rescue of Capt. Phillips was of vital importance to the whole operation. We are proud of our son and the Bainbridge crew. God bless them and continue to watch over them. "HOOYAH, NAVY!!!" "NAVY SEALS ROCK AND ROLL."

Bob,
I'm sure you've been on pins and needles watching and waiting the for Pirates/Hostage situation to come to a conclusion. Please let Andy know we are proud of him and his fellow shipmates.

Bob, thanks for the offer of help. I'm certain that as Billy's journey begins I will have plenty of questions to ask. Being in San Diego for school will give him an opportunity to go check out his ship. I'm hoping he will be able to board as a visitor and take alittle tour.
Best wishes to Andy also. What is his rate? Billy is an IC (Interior Communications Electrician). Apparently, the reason he received 4 C-Schools is because that is the training and experience needed for his rate on the USS Howard.

Hello Paige, the Bainbridge is homeported in Norfolk. I will do my best to answer your questions, if any. If I don't know, there are many others who can help. I can ask Andy if I have to. Best wishes to Billy. I hope he has a good "C' school experience. It's been many years since I went to "C" school in Vallejo, Ca. at Mare Island.

Bob,
Thank you for joining the group! My son, Billy just received his orders for the USS Howard (DDG-83) home based in San Diego. He's been given 4 C-Schools also in SD, so he won't report to his ship until the end of Sept. I am anxious to learn as much as I can about the destroyers. With your past experience and Andy's current assignment, I think you will be a great source of information for those who join the group. Where is the USS Bainbridge's home base?

John,
Thank you for joining the Destroyer group also!

I was glad to see this group. I served on a Spruance class destroyer and now my son is on an Arleigh Burke class, the USS Bainbridge DDG96. He is currently at sea with the Ike Strike Group. "Haze gray and underway."
