We were lucky.  Our daughter got lucky going for Pacific assignments instead of Atlantic, ending up with San Diego.  We're on the West Coast, and her two younger sisters in college are also around here, except over 500 miles from home.  If you read through this thread, you'll see we were lucky back in April this year to do a Tiger Cruise (from Hawaii to San Diego), too.

Thanks, hopefully somebody else is out there.  The funny thing is we are from the West Coast, but he chose a ship on the East Coast to see some other parts of the country...

Welcome to the destroyers group, Paul.  I'm not sure I've seen the ship here before.  I think most of us have sailors based on the West Coast, primarily in San Diego.  I hope someone sees your post and will answer for you.

My son is on the USS Roosevelt.  Is there any other Roosevelt family out there??

Being allergic to seafood myself, I don't know, but there are a TON of them.  Check out the Old Town section - http://www.oldtownsandiegoguide.com/restaurants.html - which is "downtown" in San Diego and not too far from the 22nd Street base entrance.  A lot of restaurants within easy walking distance of a single parking space (if you find one).

My son, the sailor ,destroyer made it back to port in San Diego. He got a small taste of life at sea in the navy during a joint exersise. There was alot of training and drills that helped the time go by fairly quick, however he was glad to get back to dry land so that he and his wife can find an apartment and start their life at the naval station.
