If you can have it done at home before he goes into the Navy then he could wait and go in with a SEAL Contract. If he joins the Navy in another Rate then he would need to sign up for a Rate that does not require a lot of training. The reason for this is that if the Navy invest lots of money training someone they will except them to stay in that Rate so they get their moneys worth. They will not like the idea of training someone for a year and a half or longer (Boot Camp, A School and maybe C School) just to have they request a transfer. If SEAL is the only thing he wants then he may want to have the operation done at home and if there is a problem he may or may not want to join. If he joins and there is a problem he will already be in the Navy and will have to serve his commitment.

There are so many guys that do not understand that their dream of becoming a SEAL is a very hard thing to accomplish. With the new rule of one roll back, then your done will not help the BUDS guys. Now about than 75% of a class do not make it to the Teams. I have seen guys get rolled 3 or more times but since they changed the rules to one and done that will mean the percentage makes it through may drop. If you are dropped or DOR you will get your choice of maybe 3 or 4 available Rates and from what I have read don't expect it to be something you would have chosen. I have talked to many moms and dads of guys that got dropped or DORed and half say they guy is down and really wishes he had not joined. The other have says there guys are OK and they don't mind their Rate. Most say their guy will not try again after their 2 year wait for another chance.

Talk with you son and explain the options, explain the new rules and discuss the fact that Pre-BUDS will ship 200 guys to Coronado and after BO and Hell Week they will probably be 70-85 still in class. After HW they have about 3 more weeks, Phase II, Phase III and SQT. The guys can get rolled all the way up to the end of SQT.

Good luck to you Son. My GS was very fortunate to have started BUDS Class 273 with 170 guys and finish SQT Class 273 with 45. Nine guys started in the class and 36 rolled into the class as it progress from Phase to Phase.

I think I would have advised him to do it at home first.

My son was told to absolutely not have lasik on his own and doing so would require an extra year wait. He was told the Navy needed SEALS and would take care of it, however taking another critical job would probably prevent him from moving into SEALS. Then later they wanted to know why he wasn't going into nuclear. Needless to say we have heard many conflicting suggestions.

Brad said:

"My Son wants nothing more than to be a SEAL."

"He was told to enter the Navy in another capacity, then apply for eye surgery, then transfer later."

If SEAL is the only thing he wants in the Navy, it might be risky to join first and be disappointed if he can't transfer.

My son was interested in Lasik even though he met the new Feb 09 standards. If I recall correctly, there was only a 6 month wait to join Navy with SO contract after surgery. I'd bet there is a 6 month wait if he got the procedure in the Navy also, but I'm not sure. My son went anyway, but if he needed it to pass standards, I think I would have advised him to do it at home first.

Transfer can be difficult. His roommate in pre-BUD/S couldn't transfer from rescue diver, so he had to quit Navy instead of re-up and re-enlist with SO contract.

I agree with John. Since they have changed the rule on eye surgery that would be your only option. There are so many guy wanting to get into the SEAL Program the Navy does not have to worry about get enought guys.

Hi Brad,

My son needed the PRK surgery when he when to BUD/S a couple of years ago.  He was rolled several times because of it (Waiting for and Healing from).  He told me, they are no longer offering this for new recruits.  So, the route you mentioned may be the only way.

I've got to ask here...

My Son wants nothing more than to be a SEAL. He passed the physical tests, and his scores were all high enough, however, his eyesight isn't good enough.

He was told to enter the Navy in another capacity, then apply for eye surgery, then transfer later.

What are his real chances of this happening in your opinion?

Guys, remember a Seal live in the ocean and a SEAL (SEa, Air, Land) is a Special Ops Operator.

As life changing for my wife and me as my son's words were "I want to be a Navy Seal" --can't begin to imagine those families getting word of that tragic event.  God bless them all.
