Sr. There are things, places and information that your son won't be able to share with you. He mustn't, and you shouldn't know about them. That said, he will be your son. He will be different, but this is what growing up is about. Some will find this hard, and it might feel like separation. We all grow apart; relationships change, but this change can be for the better, especially when it is based on achievement.
Besides, what young man isn't looking for the chance to answer, when you ask, "What did you do today?" "Can't tell you."
Horseshoe, very well said and I agree with you 100%. My GS has 2 families, in fact several of my family members now have 2 families. Our Navy family is important to us and our bio-family is also important. I think the guys understand maybe more than we think how important his bio-family is and it will be stronger in the future but their Navy family will be very important as they will give they strength in other ways. I know my new Navy family has really helped me and I can only hope I have helped and been there for them. How lucky and rewarding is it for me to have 2 very close families, a job and still have time to enjoy all the rewards I get from the 3. If anything I think the training helped our family become tighter, introduced us to a world of new things and a family that can answer question, be there for you when others don't understand and where else can you meet so many people for so many backgrounds, so many locations and know you can call on any of them for help with your concerns, question and can share your joy on subjects that most of our friend do not understand. Sr I agree that the mind games, distraction and other things they throw at the guys are to find out now who really wants this instead of waiting till they are in a life or death situation or they have spend millions of our dollars to train someone and then have them drop. Look at 2 things, first the Navy want more Special Ops guys and second look at how many guys start this training and how many graduate. My GS started BUDS with 170+ and the graduating class was 49, of that number only 9 was from the original class, all the other were from other classes that had been rolled due to injury or performance from earlier class. The majority of the guys that started are in the Navy and are now doing a different job.
Sr explain to him how hard life can be and only school and training will make it easier, this goes for everything in life and every job (Navy, car salesman, Doctor, school teacher). What does he want to do for the rest of this life, or at least thinks the wants to do. I don't know what your first job was or what you do now but most people go through many different job before finding that job they really enjoy. I remember in grade school I was going to be a policeman or fireman when I grew up, high school I wanted to be a translator in the UN, after school I was in retail for 20 years, they fast food. and for the last 27 year I have been working for a company that services office equipment and could kick myself for not starting this type of work earlier. Tell things change and his wants and need may change, or possibly he will be luck and start off with what he ends up doing for the rest of his life.
Good Luck to your Son and to You.
Merry Christmas, guys! It's great to have them home, even as fleeting as it is. Managed a brief shopping trip today w/ our guy & his mom is most jealous that we excluded her[altho she's the beneficiary].
On a side note, I am rather surprised @ some of the posts on the N4M site for this class.
Again, Merry Christmas & enjoy your sons. Best Christmas ever!
Jerry, enjoy your time with both of them at home. Tell them both that I am proud of what they are doing.
Tony -- Thanks for sharing. My oldest son started preBUD/S in Jan 2009 (I believe he was in the seventh Class). A lot has changed/improved over the past couple of years. Ironically, I picked-up my youngest son from Great Lakes JUST THIS MORNING (he's completed his preBUD/S Class and reports for BUD/S Jan 5)!
Hey 273 -- My oldest arrives home Sun. A very Merry Christmas to be sure!
Tony, I had forgotton about that article. My GS was in the second Pre-BUDS Class. He started on April 1.
